Skip hire in the Tarn (81)

Good morning friends!

We are in desperate need of a skip to get shot of 50 years worth of ‘rubbish’ in our house. Trips to the local tip are not possible unfortunately as (1) I dont have a trailer or tow bar on the car and (2) there is just too much!

Does anyone in the Tarn, ideally close to Carmaux or Albi (but not essential) have any recommendations for a skip hire company that would drop a skip for a few days for us to fill?

Really hoping that we can get this sorted….

Many thanks!

Carl

In my former life here with a family building business, skips are not the same animals as you find in the UK. Bennes here come very large and usually you may only deposit ONE type of rubbish only, usually gravats and other building materials, ordinary household rubbish is not usually allowed because the benne company cannot sort it and gravats/dégats go straight to land fill etc and are tipped. You must also apply for a permis to site anything on the road and provide lighting for cars & pedestrians to pass safely at night. They are not cheap either, basic small size when we used to have them started around €300 HT. Your best bet and cheapest would be to hire a lorry/large van from one of the hire places and do the déchetterie yourself, sorting at the same time so you can do it quickly. For van hire, I allways use Leroy Merlin starting at €9/day and you pay for the kilometrage done plus a deposit cheque of €1000 as a caution, Bricodepot do hire as do Super U, LeClerc, Intermarché etc for about same prices.

But a word of warning. If you have a UK credit card use that for the deposit, hopefully it won’t go through, whereas if you use a French one you could break the limit which will leave you unable to pay for the hire with it.

I learned this the hard way.

Great advice!

Thats why I always give a cheque and what LM ask for usually. You are right about french debit cards though as we found out too, a good 20 years or so when one of our vehicles was damaged and the insurers let OH have a hire van for a week but………..he had to give his debit card details as security and it was blocked until that hire van was returned and all the paperwork sorted. We didn’t/don’t have any sort of UK banking stuff then or now.
