Smallish car for towing a micro caravan

Having had a lot of help about licence requirements etc for towing, I now have another question for you car gurus!

My partner’s Dacia Sandero is fine to tow our soon-to-be-purchased micro caravan as the equipped caravan weight is 460kg and the car will tow 550kg (in principle)

However, my partner has never liked the car (too wide) and was thinking of replacing it with something that is hopefully not big but could be capable of towing up to 750kg.

Since neither of us knows ***-all about cars we didn’t know whether we might be better with a sort of compact crossover car. Our budget is not massive but if anyone has suggestions, we would really appreciate it .

I know b…r all about towing cars but, just in case it turns out you really like the microcaravan, if you do I’d say there’s a better than even chance you could want something bigger (and heavier) quite soon

So if it would mean you’re considering changing a car, perhaps build a little more room into car towing weight for expansion?

When towing, weight in the car is often your friend to stop the tail wagging the dog, so to speak. Good relaxed handling also helps.

If I wanted a car to match your criteria I’d look at a first generation mini countryman cooper D or a Freelander.

IMO a terrible vehicle.

I’m towing the beasts with my Tiguan soon to be Volvo XC60. Main reason to have more weight margin and power when close or at limit. I see plenty of Dacia Duster towing so that could be an option. I drive an automatic and that’s generally ok. I sort of understand that if you have the factory towbar there is anti-sway software built-in. Is the case on the Tiguan, Volvo, Audi, etc.

Not the best for reliability and low running costs, but I’ve known a number of people use the older models for towing (including up to quite large double-axle caravans) and they seem to cope without batting an eyelid.

For a small(ish) car that’s solid and confident I’d still prefer the countryman. I had one for 7 years, and it was a very stable, solid and practical vehicle.

I use a bmw 1 series and I find it to be a great small utility vehicle - roof rack fitted for oversize items, hatchback so good load space with seats collapsed, and unbraked towing capacity of 720kg for towing trailer.

I have a suggestion for you ! Will reply tomorrow x

Thank you very much everyone for your suggestions. I’m having a look at each of them now
