Indeed, though formerly we could only vote in local elections.
@ChrisMann As a question please, is this to do with Brexit or before that did those outside French nationality have the right to vote ?
You mean the country to which many emmigrants pay taxes to, and which in some way or another controls their destiny by the way the largest proportion of their income derives?
When Britain was part of the EU we, in our innocence, believed in the democracy that was at the heart of that institution. We had European citizenship and could vote like all citizens in the way it conducted its affairs. Then Brexit happened, something which changed our lives completely, but 1.3 million of us were not allowed to vote in that referendum. The vote was so close that it might well be that Brexit might not have happened. But born in one democratic system (well nominally anyway), living in another, and part of, to many of us, the European dream, it was all snatched away from us without once being asked.
@DrMarkH yes, i agree but they have chosen to reside here and whether they have money stacked in the UK or elsewhere, income tax in France should be paid and it mainly is. I think this thread might be about the right to vote in the âexpatriate countryâ Maybe they should have the right to vote where they live /reside financially / declare their residence or financial residence but not in their âhomeâ country as now their âhomeâ country is France (or elsewhere)?
Indeed, and as Iâm sure youâre well aware, âtaxation without representationâ was a driver of the Boston Tea Party.
It may have been although I think there was more than that at play. It is sad that those who live in another country have no representation when they pay their revenue tax there is it not? And at the same time lose their right to vote in their âhomeâ land when it is not?
Thatâs terrible, that you could not vote during the Brexit fiasco.
Well over 90% of my income comes from the U.K. and because of a Government pension I pay far more tax in the U.K. than I do in France. As an immigrant I feel that I have far less of a right to vote locally than I do in the country where I have such strong financial and taxation ties. After a long time of being one of those people who didnât have a vote anywhere I really canât agree with your sentiments.
Riiight. You keep telling yourself that. just donât bother lying about what is going to happen to the economy when he enacts his measures. Itâs fascism, pure and simple. Happy to be woke, I donât lie to lie to myself about the dangers his policies will be for most of America. Trump bows before a psychopath names Putin whose army rapes and tortures infants, toddlers, women and men and posts it on social media. If you like it so much, why donât you move to Russia or the US where you can enjoy the effects more fully? Maybe you should be posting on another forum.
Massive voter fraud.
I assume you donât count TVA, TF or TDH as ârealâ taxes?
A good point but that doesnât change the fact that I pay my income tax in the U.K. I pay âVATâ in many different countries not only France.
Youâll have to stop sitting on the fence Eliza.
Yes indeed, but who is she shooting at?
mikep, most likely, who drank the KoolAid.
Still confused.
I joined this site for conversations about living in France, not to listen to Russian disinfo bs. Your stupid, pointless comment and all the other RW troll posts you make have one goal, to poison public discourse. The moderators need to shut you down and not allow off topic posts like yours.
If youâre referring to M Scullyâs âfenceâ advice - I donât think that was intended maliciously, but rather he was being ironic because youâre very obviously not sitting on the fence -
Instead just file it under Anglo - Irish humour.
Guess I was confused, but not now.
Well Eliza, Iâve been a contributor on here for over twelve years, youâve been here sixteen hours and youâve already launched a vitriolic attack on me and decided what the moderators should and should not do I think that tells us all we need to know about you.
