Sorry, it's another satellite TV/BBC query

I’ve been combing through other threads, but as a pretty non-tech person can’t seem to find the exact answer to my question.

I have a Goodman’s HD box and a dish that was here when i bought, so installed about 15 years ago. Only one lead, so I can only record the channel I’m watching. No internet connection. Reception of HD channels is only burbling voices, no pictures. With the BBC switchover to HD I’m now down to BBC3 only!

Does this sound like I need a new signal receiver part, or a whole new dish to access the BBC HD channels? I don’t know what kind it is, not massive anyway! In Maine et Loire, 49. Thank you for any help!

You need someone to fix it - its probably not the box. It could be a few things from tweaking the dish through replacing cables to a new dish.

Unless you like faffing about up a ladder just call someone

In our gîte I had to reimstall my box to restore channels, the satellite was fine. In our house the box itself was knackered (same satellite dish) and I had to get a new one. So many possibilities for the fault.

Remember that any cables connecting the LNB to the received that are exposed to the elements will degrade over time. The same goes for the LNB, being some electronics in a plastic housing that’s been sat out in the sun, wind and rain for umpteen years.

If you’re thinking of upgrading the Goldman’s box to something more recent, make sure you match your new LNB to it.

I had the goodmans setup, it failed after about two years, moved up to something better. That said explore as others have said options first.

I used to have satellite TV but trees vifrtually stopped the signal.
About a year ago I bought an inexpensive Amazon Firestick and placed between internet modem and the TV - now TV is exclusively via Internet (we have 4G internet which is quite ok for a family of four on laptops/iphone/exbox etc, and also good for live streaming.
You will also need a VPN to access UK stations - again fairly inexpensive. NordVPN is good.

I’m beginning to think that’s the best idea chrisell!

Thanks Jane, I was hoping it might be a simple fix but you’re right, so many variables…

Hmmm, cables are yet another variable, thanks for highlighting that NotALot.

Thanks Corona, the box has been good so far (about 7 years) and is still fine for SD stations, but they won’t be around for much longer…

Unfortunately we don’t have internet access here Gprit, so are reliant on the satellite set up. Maybe we’ll stagger into the 21st century sometime…

The box works from what you describe - after that unless you like ladders it’s simpler to call someone and let them work it out.

The move to HD is showing where systems were on the edge for some reason - HD is less forgiving so it stops working. But there are multiple possible reasons

But how about volume for streaming?

Could well be the LNB they dont seem to last as long anymore.

We have no problems with me watching streamed football, my wife watching Thai streamed TV(!), my two sons using Roblox and Youtube. Best decision I ever made regarding internet…

In Maine et Loire, generally you should not have too many issues as long as you have the correct dish/LNB and cable. It sounds to me as though you have either too small a dish, an old and not very good or failing LNB, cheap cable, or any combination of these.
If the installation is that old, it may be best to bite the bullet and get a new dish, LNB and cable using a reputable installer if you can’t do this yourself. Many of these older installations used cheap cable and use dishes suitable for use in the UK, but not suitable for most of France, especially now the SD channels have disappeared. If your dish is oval in shape, with it being wider than it is tall, then this is almost certainly not suitable and will probably be no more than 60cm. What you probably need is an absolute minimum of 80cm, with 100cm being better. If you do this, I would also get a dual LNB and install two cables.

Sure, no problem with speed, but are you capped on gigabytes.

NO I am not - Unlimited Gb per month - it is now €44.99 a month with Bougyeres.

Thanks, noted.

Thanks, the full Monty option but good advice.
