IIRC you will require a valid passport as it is the only travel document issued by the UK UDI. I don’t think a CdS will achieve that level of status.
So maybe citizenship is a better option if I don’t want to continue to pay the UK for permission to exist as a human being?
The cost of applying for citizenship will be similar to next 30 years of UK passport… and if you have many children and marriages that will add to the price.
To piggy- back off this query, I’d appreciate some help with our situation. We are considering ‘the move’ from the UK for various reasons, but for other reasons, can’t relocate this year.
By the end of this year I should have obtained dual U.K./EU passport, but my wife will have U.K. only.
I’ll be U.K. pension age in July 2021 so would aim to move then. (My wife won’t be pension age until 2025).
We would be retired, relying on private/UK pension/ other income.
We would rent initially before deciding our ideal location.
Questions:
What would we need to do re obtaining residency?
(Assume my wife would need to apply for a CDS - assume I wouldn’t?)
From all I’ve read, in our situation, the only disadvantage to moving next year would be potential negation of my wife’s eventual U.K. pension enhancements?
We’ve no health issues & I understand I could merge with the French system, but my wife would need to have some private cover?
Any other significant factors to consider?
Bit long winded - I’ve emailed contact-brexit@interieur.gouv.fr but had no reply.
Any help/ directions would be appreciated!
Cheers
Andy
Hi Graham,
I had a look at the reference but it starts with "As an EU national, you can join your EU spouse in another EU country either because of your own EU rights or as their dependant. "
and of course I’m no longer European as a mere Brit.
My wife is French, we live in France, we work and pay taxes etc in France and we all have Carte Vitale - I think that I personally have it covered but any hints and tips pending the October web-site rush would be appreciated.
As you will remain an EU citizen then not very much straight away. In time you do tax returns etc, but not until beginning of 2022. In due course your wife should apply for a CDS, but since she’s married to you it is a formality I believe. It should all be able to be done online with just a few bits of paper.
What I don’t know - and I’m not sure anyone does yet - is what the UK intends to do about the european S1 system that allows you to request that the UK cover your healthcare once you are a pensioner (and your dependants eg wife). If they decide not to subscribe to this after 1/1/21 you will have to pay standards cotisations to be in the French health service. You will both need private cover for your first few months before you can apply and join health service, but after that anyone who is resident can join PUMA. You just might have to pay - but well worth it, a good health service.
That’s great, Jane and pretty much confirms our current thoughts based on the research we’ve done.
It’s the unknown bits that could be significant.
Thanks for your response. Sure I’ll soon be consulting the site again!
Cheers
Andy
