Spy-Cameras

Does anyone own a Tesla EV? We recently saw a post on a different local French forum indicating that our neighbour (French) uses his car to keep an eye on his neighbours. The post was quite threatening. Is it legal to spy and film your neighbours in France? Did anyone else know that cars such as Tesla’s have such a capability. His watches and records 24/7 according to his post. I know in the UK that Amazon door cams can record what happens adjacent to the property but watching and recording the comings and goings on the street makes me feel quite uncomfortable. I now go out of my way to avoid the Tesla. Of course I most probably am going from sneaky camera to another as yet unknown. George Orwell had no idea how right he was. It is many times worse than he could ever have imagined. I am not mentioning GSM phones as this post is specific to spy cams in EV’s. I bet the footage gets fed back to a database in the cloud that even the neighbour does not know about. Very Creepy! :worried:

 my word… what an emotive turn of phrase…

Rules are in place to protect one’s personal privacy… so if you’ve any misgivings I suggest you go and speak with your Mairie…
EDIT: speak with your Neighbour/Tesla Owner first… perhaps… are you on “good terms” ??

France has strong protections about recording images of people. You can’t even have your door cam capturing images of the street.

Not good on two fronts. He happens to be the deputy Marie and no to the second. Quite an obnoxious peace of work and even some of my French friends have voiced this opinion of the ‘Gnome’ as me my wife refer to him. He has a gnome on the doorstep and he seems to have modelled his appearance on this figure and if it was a competition he would win first prize! We only found out about the Tesla spy cam by his rather nasty posting on how he had seen someone posting a letter in his letter box which they assumed was anonimous but because of his car it was not and he made a point of letting them know that he knew who they were. Very complicated but he did it to frighten them and I think that it worked. As I said a nasty piece of work. We think that he is Deputy Marie so that he can keep things under his control. Maybe Nasty could Na2i instead but I need to be careful.

If the car was recording images while parked on his drive, and the person was on his land it is perfectly legal here. Although they should have a notice up so say that filming may happen.

His car is parked on the public highway outside his front door and the person did not need to go his land to drop the letter in his mailbox.

Then if you are concerned then lay a complaint at the gendarmerie.

On the subject of spy-cams. I really wish they would fix them at the bin sites. The amount of fly tipping and what is tipped is absolutely disgusting at many of the sites in our area. I have considered just putting up some printed signs warning of hidden cameras and that the site is under surveillance to deter the scumbags from dumping their old settees, tyres, mattresses, nappies, garden refuse, etc. Now they have more to pay at the official refuse sites the more the unofficially dump. Maybe Tesla owners should park up at these sites and do something useful with their spy-cams. They could then send the films with the offenders car registrations to the local Gendarmarie.

Ah… well … that’s Democracy for you…
He will have sufficient support from the local voting population… to have gained his current position.

However, if you feel uncomfortable talking with him or the Mairie… you can always go to a higher level of local government to make enquiries/complaints about his “spy-camera” .

How do you know the dumpers are not being prosecuted? They are effectively in our neck of the woods and it’s working. Why not pop in and ask the local police.

Well that’s nonsense for a start, don’t worry :slightly_smiling_face: My car does the same and it’s theft and damage protection, not seeing what the Duponts are up to. That said, I wouldn’t trust Musk as far as I could throw him.

You’re dead right, the build quality is dreadful.

A bit axiomatic, but we are nowhere near the level of surveillance George predicted, yet. The amazing thing is that we are self funding it with Alexa, Siri, Blinks etc. :slightly_smiling_face:

I might be in a minority, but I think that CCTV in public areas is a great idea. I don’t have anything to hide, so I don’t have anything to fear. I always feel far safer if I know that there are cameras around. Cameras inside shops and retail premises are good shoplifting deterrents, and I reckon that every bar should have at least one camera outside to help curb unruly behaviour. I wish our Mairie would install one outside my home to deal with all the vehicles being driven the wrong way in a one-way street. Perhaps such a camera would also serve to cause the many unbelted drivers coming to and from the Boulangerie to buck their ideas up.
As for Tesla man, I think I would just smile and wave and bid him ‘Bonjour’ each time that I passed his car.

When people say this, I often wonder if they have curtains and, if so, what do they have to hide?

We just have one set of curtains to cut down reflexions in the TV screen.
Otherwise, we just use the shutters which are closed at dusk, if not before to shade off the sun.
Personally, I really don’t care if someone wishes to watch me walk naked between the bathroom and the dressing room, but we do of course exercise a modicum of discretion in case the inadvertent viewer might find themselves offended at the sight of my ancientness in all its glory - or not, as the case may be.

This site is wonderful, I made that comment yesterday during a period of frequent internet loss and when it popped up again it took me quite a while to remember what I was replying to. Then I pressed the reply button. :joy:

I don’t have a problem with a bored security guard watching their CCTV monitors as I walk through a shopping centre. But facial recognition technology is so advanced now that systems can monitor who you might be associating with and the places you frequent. If that happens to be a place that houses a dissident journalist, your lawful business might earn you a tap on the shoulder.

In which case, no doubt your lawful business can be quickly explained and verified so there is no problem. If however, a person’s business is perhaps somewhat less than entirely lawful, then I venture to suggest that their shoulder should indeed be tapped.
I am not in favour of computerised facial recognition systems being used as stand alone evidence in a courtroom, but as a tool to point the forces of law and order in the right direction of whom to go and speak to in person, then I think they are a jolly good thing.
