My Starlink reported degraded service but carried on - back to normal today although at one point it was reporting my ground station as Athens
Good morning, all. Further to my Starlink saga, all the kit is now here. I’ve opted for the weighted ridge-mount fitting.
Unfortunately, my ladders won’t reach high enough to enable my placing the mount on the roof, so I’m a bit stuck.
I did search on the internet for any local satellite installers (I’m in 24380), found one who was English, and when contacted on the phone, his answerphone message said he’d prefer E mail contact - so I E mailed him two or three weeks ago, in advance. No reply. No reply seems to be the default for E mailing in France.
So I’m a bit stuck - does anyone know of a reasonable satellite installer round these parts, who might come and stick the thing on the roof ridge, for me?
Thanks in advance
Chris
Try asking in Darty or Ubaldi or another TV shop, even FNAC perhaps. They may know of an installer. We used a guy who has a little TV shop in a local village to replace our dish and he did a fine job.
Thanks, John. I’ve abandoned the ridge-mount idea, and gone for plan B, involving wall brackets and a mast, which I’m attempting, myself.
Hope it goes well Chris,
To be honest i think the weighted ridge mount could be a risk, wall brackets and mast are likely much stronger / longer term. As long as you have a clear view North/North west you should be ok and the starlink app will have the obstruction map you use to check.
Great, thanks Peter. Now I have to dodge the showers and thunderstorms and get on with it!
The kit is now 224€ at Boulanger:
Any update and pics Chris ? Wondering if you’re stuck on that roof ![]()
Hello, Peter.
After a lot of faffing about trying to clamp a pole to the existing “I” shaped brackets sticking out from the wall, I managed in the end to get the Starlink dish up, and it’s running nicely, now – about 200 MBs download, and 20 Mbs up, on average. I intend to install an Orbi 6e Mesh system now, as the Starlink router is not very good with broadcasting throughout the house – stone walls, etc.
Chris
Hello,
For the time being we’re only at our rural French home over the summary holidays where I’ve been able to work the last few years due to a new mobile mast installed locally.
It’s not a great connection, so I’m really interested and encouraged by Starlink.
It’s sounds like a no brainer re fibre level speeds, but if I buy the kit, no issues with that, do you have to commit to a 12 month plan or, ideally, can I just pay for say 2 months and re-instate the plan the following summer? Obviously a 12 month plan would not be feasible if we’re only out there for 2 months.
Starlink website wasn’t really clear.
Cheers,
David.
Hi David,
Welcome to the site. I don’t have starlink but I just started to order it to see what the options are and stumbled upon this page…
https://www.starlink.com/fr/support/article/3a6a481b-f039-c82d-fa60-9a41fca1d1cb
It also showed it as having a 12 month contract on this page…
There’s a couple of Starlink customers on here who should be able to confirm if this is correct.
All the best.
Use the forum search function to locate previous threads - might be some pointers here
James was probably the best person to ask but he’s no longer around.
Umm… That’s this thread ![]()

In my defence this is now all I see of the thread title

as the thread title bar has become rather crowded.

We are a user of Starlink and are very happy with both the performance and reliability of the service. Performance has been slowly increasing for us and we currently get 300 Mbps down and around 25 Mbps up. We have generation 2 kit but I believe there is now a generation 3 kit on offer. With Starlink you don’t sign up for a 1 year contract and so you can cancel at any time. For the first month it FoC anyway and then the monthly subscription is 40 Euros. Even if we have fibre on offer in our location I would be reluctant to switch from Starlink. Hope this helps…
Once you have the gear, and established your account you can pause it any time, without extra cost. Starlink is excellent.
Chris
I’ve been up and running with Starlink for a year, now. It’s excellent!
You can pause the Starlink service at any time, and reinstate it later. I don’t know if there is a time limit for the pause. Your monthly payments will be suspended for that period.
