State visit - how embarrassed are you?

You have the advantage of me then, I didn’t watch anything on tv about it, I have only the picture seen above to go on and she looks ok to me in that pink outfit.

You women who are criticising another woman’s appearance ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

Seriously, give your heads a shake.

Not embarrassed in the least. I was more interested in the Helicopters circling over the city until the early hours of the morning.

I agree with you. Some very shameful remarks, and no, I’m not a monarchist.

Interesting observations. Having been prompted by this thread to take a look at the BBC coverage, I wonder if we’re seeing different things: in these pictures there’s nothing to be embarassed about whatsoever.

I am not a big fan of the royals but they are part of my culture and history and NO, I was not embarrassed at seeing them yesterday in Paris, in fact I watched it live on SKY as they arrived and felt quite happy they had made the visit. Seems a lot of the Parisiennes who turned out were pleased to see them and of course, Charles is more approachable than Liz ever was. I like Cam, she wasn’t brought up a royal and has her own unique slant on it and dosn’t come across as a toff. I detested the old Queen Mother and her ilk, they seemed to dictate everything the family did and wore. Camilla is getting on like the rest of us and not as sprightly as she was ten years ago, same with Charles. I must say I do not like those coat outfits she tends to wear but then, she would not suit a chic Dior suit like Mme Macron can get away with, they are different shaped women. The evening dress was elegant and did not show boobs or bum or even legs. We have to remember these two keep an awful lof of folks in work.

I did hesitate to add “much!”

I would also estimate that the wise Mme Macron has had some minor ‘work’ done.

Edited to say that is perfectly fine as it’s subtle.

A tad simplistic. I’m sure I’m not the only person here with cross channel financial interests.

Excuse me! I found his hair just as bad. If not worse. I’m being totally even handed in my criticism

Actually everytime Charles brushed his hair back with his hand, it made me feel a bit queasy knowing that hand would be used to shake someone’s hand and it did look a bit brylcreemed. It does need a good trim or he will end up like The baldy man who advertised cigars (Rab C Nesbit actor)

I expect that Diana, with her insecurity and challenges of self esteem would have by now rather overdone the microsurgery route.

The passage of time is undeniable and it should be noted that the King and his loving wife seem quite comfortable in their own skins.

Not at all, if you don’t agree with the monarchy and are a UK taxpayer I can understand why you’re not happy about the cost of keeping them. My argument has always been that if you want an elected head of state fine but be prepared to accept the massive cost that goes with it, it costs tens of millions to keep the Elysee Palace staffed and maintained plus the security etc surrounding Macron and his wife. Move to a republic by all means but do it for sound reasons not as a cost saving exercise because it isn’t.

Doesn’t the Royal Family cost you all about £2 per year?

Seems a bargain to me.

The Crown Estates charges approx £1billion annual rental for the sea bed on which offshore wind farms sit.

That £1billion is paid for in your electricity bill.

I make that about £18 and loose change per adult in the UK

About a month’s telly tax or Netflix. Still a bargain.

I could only find this, which suggests much smaller figures.

Mind you, the Guardian …

For me, it’s never been about the financial aspect (even moreso now I no longer pay taxes in UK). It’s not even about the people themselves (although I’m prepared to make an exception to this for Andrew). It’s the principle of a monarchy that I’m against because I’m a believer in democracy and meritocracy.
