I have a couple of 25 litre water containers which I fill at the local source, and now want to sterilise them, but wondering what is the best method, considering they are used for drinking water. Appreciate any advice that anyone’s able to offer based on experience.
Milton’s or similar - mainly sold for babies bottles etc
Thanks for the suggestion - will give it a go, as a friend suggested small dose of bleach, but really didn’t fancy that.
Which is a 1% solution of sodium hypochlorite and 16.5% table salt according to Milton sterilizing fluid - Wikipedia
Sodium hypochlorite is exactly that - bleach, albeit 1% is quite dilute.
Probably just as simple to use dilute bleach.
About the only thing bleach cant tackle is crypto and virus’s.
Hypochlorite is fairly effective against viruses of the organic kind
Not so much against the computer sort though

“The WHO recommended concentration of NaOCl is 1,000 ppm for a minimum of 1 min of contact time. The latter was deemed as a conservative estimate to inactivate most pathogens in a health care setting, prior to any validation studies on SARS-CoV-2.”
Camden tablets as used in home brewing. Must be safe because we drink out of the bottles that have been sterilized by them! Only trouble is sourcing them now because of brexit is not so easy.
Dangerous for asthmatics and bad for others if you breath it in.
I might suggest UV light or hydrogen peroxide. (Ace or hair bleach) very stong oxidiser not so much a bactericide
I can report back that finally used very very small amount of bleach as decided to go ahead without going to the supermarket for the baby bottle sterilizer and seems to have done the trick
Your local coop agricole will have them, it’s sodium metabisulphite.
Thanks. Still finding my way around the area so will have to try and find where one of these are.
You’re in 66 aren’t you - here are all the coops agricoles worth checking they are actual shops though.
I’ve always used a small amount of hydrogen peroxide/eau oxygenee about 1/4 teaspoon to 50 litres in the camping water containers
