I use StrongVPN for my Macs, iPhones & iPads & it works fine with Orange internet. I think the annual sub was €55. If the wifi is diminished, as when I take the iPad to read on the loo (!) it won't work. I find SVPN's email technical support excellent & very quick. They even offered to help me change the router so I could get iPlayer on the Smart TV. I did not bother, but bought a Mag Box & subscribe to UKTV France to get all the Sky channels via the internet. This was to watch Derby County on Sky Sports. The sub includes HD but living in the rural Gironde I can only use SD for the football.
We have a subscription to The Times & Sunday Times that has video clips of the Premiership action that without SVPN has a 'Not available in your area message'. BBC iPlayer works fine & with an old Apple TV connected to the TV whatever is on the iPad we can see on the TV.
Geoff, to do what you want I think you would need to re-program another router that can be configured for VPN-here's a link http://strongvpn.com/vpn_routers_new.html . They will advise on suitable routers & help you set up yours-if you do something wrong you may 'brick' your router. We use these
"Netgear PLP1200-100FRS Pack de 2 Adaptateurs CPL 1200 Mbps Blanc"
to connect Orange router to Smart TV without wires trailing across the room.
