Surname of neighbours

A group of neighbours, inc me, are organising a meeting/discussion with a mediator to sort the problem of noise annoyance - drumming, in this case.

The mediator has told us that he can’t move on this until he has the surname of the family, to write to them - understandably.

I only know the parents as Agnes and Jeremie. I’m on amicable terms with these people although the drumming has been raised in the past, as an issue. You may say “Ask them”.

Indeed. But the problem will arise in the next breath when I am asked why I want to know. This will kick off a discussion in the street that is supposed to happen in an office with all interested parties and the mediator.

Apart from jumping the gun on the formal RdV my French is not up to the standard I reckon would be required in what might be the heat of the moment. Our group includes at least two French people who who speak English well enough be able to understand my points and present them.

My query - is there some admin dept or source of info where I could look up the name of my neighbours? I call to mind the Voters’ Register in UK, where the list of voters and their addresses is available to see at the Council offices.

Can you sneak up to their boite au lettres unseen?

It’s usual practice to have the family name and at least initials on it to aid La Poste.

Ask the Marie. You are allowed to ask who owns parcels of land/houses. You can do it via a form, but if the commune is small then just ask.
And you can also consult the electoral list, here

Might be worth asking one of the other neighbours in the group.

For all things village, I ask the coiffeuse. Her family have been here 6 generations and know just about everything about everyone. Better than the Stasi and much friendlier.

I looked today. Unlike everyone else on the lane, inc me, no name plate.

Vire is not a village. It’s a medium size agro/commercial town.

I have to presume, tho’ I will check, if Our Leader has actually asked anyone else. If he had, he wouldn’t have sent me

"Unfortunately, he can’t help us. He wasn’t able to get your neighbors’ last name. And without a last name, he can’t send a summons. I’ve tried everything to find the name, but it’s impossible…"

I fear Our Leader is a bit of a wuss.

Who/what he/she?

I shall have to get one of the ‘locals’ to do this. I’m not on any voters’ register but that does seem a good option.

The postie

JaneJone’s advice is going to be quickest route. Pop into your Marie, the secretary should be able to help especially if you’re a smallish commune. Ours also published a local magazine that welcomed new people to the village, it was handy when we couldn’t remember someone’s name.

Yes, we have our Bulletin wh8ch welcomes newcomers and also says which house they have m9ved in and who lived there before.

New babies and deaths are also included.

Try looking on their post box, it should have theirname on it.

Very recently I had to find out the name of my very reclusive neighbour so I could write them a letter. I went to the Notaire office (the one who had dealt with my house purchase two years ago) and asked how I might find their name. The secretary/receptionist looked in her files, then went on the computer and printed out the details of their property which included their full names and ages as well as other information.

Their door is the only one on the lane without a name plate. Now I think of it, I’m the only one with a box, set into the wall. Others have just a letter slot in their street door.

Good shout @Mik_Bennett @Gareth @Debbie_Wade @Mike313. Thanks to all for suggestions.

I would have done that today but La Poste tells me that it was impossible to deliver a package to me this morning. I dunno why.

One problem is that if they send stuff in anything larger than a Kangoo, the vehicle can’t get down the street. I’ve seen a postie in a Kangoo balk at the pinch point and retreat, despite me telling her that we residents drive down this lane daily in bigger vehicles.

Or - special circs a.t.mo - there’s ‘Route Barée’ at the top on account of a collapse of the wall 300m further down, past the last house. In fact it’s easily poss to drive past it, even with the plastic bollards they’ve put round the rubble.

The wall collapsed 2 weeks+ago after heavy rains. Ironic, that, after the discussion about the bulge in the wall by my place. If they reckon it’s worth a ‘Route Barée’ and tape [now removed by irate neighbour] why haven’t they repaired it yet?

Vire is 17.5k pop, a sub-prefecture for Calvados.

Near where I lived years go, part of the roadside on my route to work was undermined by torrential rain and part of the tarmac road on one side crumbled away. They put up ‘temporary’ traffic lights. It took over three years for someone to turn up and fix it :open_mouth::frowning::face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

The Mairie for Vire is open for business… why not ask at Reception there or at your Post Office if you don’t know/see your Postman.

I once had cause to visit the Mairie at Angouleme to make various enquiries. Very helpful on Reception and the Maire himself was charming… and Angouleme has around 41,175 inhabitants! .. so Vire should be easy-peasy :crossed_fingers:

(not that I actually asked to speak with the Maire, that happened quite by chance, while I was waiting…)

Very encouraging. Thanks Stella. I shall put Our Leader on the Mairie line and voter reg option and try the P.O. sorting office myself. There’s an Anglophone postie who sometimes does our lane.

In some case if it’s your wall you may have to pay for it. €€€€€

I seem to recall that in that thread or maybe it was a case reported by ‘France Insider’, a collapsed wall belonging to a resident was fixed by the Mairie at its [public] expense because the resulting blockage of the roadway was of a ‘public amenity’.

Some years ago I remember hearing of a Facebook scare where folk were being advised not to display their names on the post box. I’m not on Facebook and can’t remember what the scare was about. Stupidity abounds on that medium.
