What a shame, and the new logo has no character at all.
Don’t have a problem with the re-branding so keeping the original image on the tinned version seems odd, I guess they want to keep the world record.
They probably hold one for making a record number of people into diabetics as well.
Maybe so - but Golden Syrup was a compulsory addition to rice pudding when I was a kid, in the early 14th century.
I’m not so keen on it now - too sugary.
Certainly when I was a child… golden syrup was a luxury and thoroughly enjoyed when/if one got the chance… not a hope of “over-indulging”…
We’re heading into Monty Python Yorkshiremen sketch territory again…
Agreed, how times have changed, go and buy something prepaired in a shop and its got various sugars added, even a roast chicken? Cant say I have ever added sugar to a roast chicken
I assume they do that so its skin goes brown when roasted?
Learn something every day (still). Knew it was a lion, but not dead and rotten
It is the one Samson killed, and when he went back to the corpse later on there was a bees’ nest in it and he made a riddle out of it for his wedding feast, along the lines of “guess what I’m talking about: out of the eater came something to eat from something strong came something sweet” (the long winter evenings must simply have flown by).
“While we’ll continue to honour our original branding with the heritage tin, consumers need to see brands moving with the times and meeting their current needs."
Marketing people, the original Golgafrinchams.
Same here, but the treacle is great in cakes and biscuits. Can’t get it here, at least not at a reasonable price. We use the equivalent you can get in most bio shops, but it’s not quite the same.
Seconded. It’s one of the very few things we have to rely on friends to bring over from the UK, along with Marmite, (unavailable in this area), grape nuts and hoisin sauce.
What do you use as a golden syrup substitute from bio shops out of interest (my wife is a keen cake maker!)?
Not golden syrup, treacle. I buy Mélasse Noire, which is black cane molasses. If you fancy a treacle overload, try this
Treacle is unfortunately not the same flavour as Golden Syrup. Texture close enough. But flavour too dark (and No it doesn’t dilute). It was a ‘burnt’ flavour in ginger biscuits, and baked apples with sultanas, won’t be using anything except golden syrup in a recipe that calls for it, again.
I’ve just come back from a lightning visit to the UK with a few tins. The 1lb tins are considerably better value than the smaller ones being sold in a lot of places. Had to check carefully and found a bigger Tesco had them.
Do you have a HyperU anywhere near, or on your travels? Ours has all of the above, and we have a very small anglo community!
If not use maple syrup, or agave syrup. Both easily available.
Yes, of course it’s not. It’s completely different. That’s why I like one and not the other
Important to know that it needs to be kept in the fridge once opened…
They don’t taste like golden syrup and maple syrup is much thinner which messes recipes up (only eaten, not cooked with, agave).
Needs must…
