Hi, any help appreciated…
We have received a new tax letter which we have never received before - a demad for ‘Taxe d’habitation sur les logements vacants’.
We live in the UK but have owned a property in France for over 20 years, it is completely derelict and uninhabitable, has been for over 60 years, no electricity, water connection, no windows etc, a shell of a building. We have received a tax demand every year for Taxe Fonciere, which we have always paid, but this year we recieved a letter asking us to pay the ‘Taxe d’habitation sur les logements vacants’ for the first time. Is this correct? Do you pay tax on an empty property even if it is derelict?
Taxe d’habitation and taxe sur les logements vacants are not the same.
Je suis propriétaire d’un logement qui est inoccupé. Dois-je payer la taxe d’habitation ? : Anil, questions et réponses sur l'immobilier.
Not quite right RP, there are two types of tax on empty properties. One is logement vacant and the other is taxe d’hab sur lodgement vacant. Explanation here

For OP, you need to contact you tax office to get your house declared uninhabitable and then it will be exonerated.
Ok great thank you
Contact them and tell them. They will anul the demand. I did it last year. Because the payment date was due and I wrongly thought it would take an age to fix I coughed up but I quickly received a refund.
Thanks, I will contact them
Sensible. Generally best to pay and dispute as otherwise you can end up with a fine that takes longer to dispute.
In the old days, you could go to the mairie and demand a visit to inspect the inhabitable property by a member of the local council who would then issue an attestation of such for you to present to the local Impôts, maybe your first port of call.
