Teaching private English lessons - going rate?

Hello

I've just set up as an auto-entrepreneur and hope to find people interested in one-to-one English lessons (I have done a TEFL course). I'm interested to know what the going hourly rate is, if anyone can help?

nothing's advertised, I got mine from candidatures spontanées. When I first arrived I wrote to everyone and everyone. First results weren't brilliant and the first CCI only had a small amount of teaching (Cantal), then I kept pushing and was asked to teach an evening class at another (Rodez) and ended up working pretty much full time there. Then got some work and the IUT in Figeac, again through asking/writing which lead to other work again full-time for a while before changes were introduced. You just have to get out there and push! ;-)

Hi Leyla,

CCI - Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie - vacataire work as with IUT/University and other higher education establishments. Best rates when you're fully independant and paying your own charges sociales etc. Depends largely on teh CCI/IUT and your contacts (as ever), I was pretty much full time vacataire at one stage and had to turn down work but there have been a lot of changes to the system which is one of the reasons I left. Best teaching i had was CCI where I was almost always teaching technical english in mechanical industries which was right up my street.

Bonne chance ;-)

It depends where you live. I am in the country and charge €20 for adults and lycéens, €15 for collège and younger, using cheques emploi service. People simply won't pay anymore, but in Paris you could get double that. Language schools and soutien scolaire companies have recently reduced their rates, too. However, I have seen adverts on Kelprof from people offering English lessons for as little as €8 an hour, which is far too low.

I charge €25 for 1 to 1

One-to-one is a little uncomfortable.

You don't feel you're getting enough and your students feel they're paying far too much.

If you can get 5 students together you get 50 an hour and they're only paying 10!

Also, from a teaching point of view, you'll get better results from groups.

Thanks everyone! I'll see if I get any takers at 20 euros. Fingers crossed as I don't really want to go any lower, it'll take me a while to prep each lesson to start with too!!

Translation for official documents seems to be about x 3!!!!!!!

It may be worth it looking into getting paid in Cheques Emplois Services and charge whatever rate you want as some services entitle people to get a rebate from their income tax (ie cleaning ladies, academia type tutoring, gardening, etc ...)

Hi Mary,

€20 per hour sounds about right for most private classes but you will find that rate fluctuates considerably up (for companies, big cities) and down (for soutien scolaire, students etc). 'en noir' local network classes (advertising on-line and in coffee shops) can be as little as half or even a third of programmed 'facturé' classes to companies. Some 'schools' (realistically agencies that provide 'formation en anglais') charge up to €60 or €70 per hour! but you would need to become French or change your father to get that. good luck! Curiously, being a native English teacher doesn't mean more clients or money in France, often it is the reverse. good luck.

yep, 20€ an hour is pretty standard, but you'll get plenty asking you to do it for free or for 5 or 10€ an hour. Try getting into CCI or higher education where it's 40€ an hour ;-)

Hi Mary ,

I pay €20 an hour for one-to-one French lessons , and I know she also teaches English , so i assume the rate is similar
