That political discussion with occasional humour thread

 far too many plonkers on both sides of the divide to use that as a barometer of competence IMO.

Ahh, but the predictable screams of righteous indignation are quite

As @tim17 pointed out loathing of landlords must stem from ignorance and jealousy and practical experience of being a tenant.
There are good landlords who provide good accommodation for good tenants but that’s boring and doesn’t provoke a reaction does it.
I have no doubt that if I posted refering to various activities being run by bastards it would provoke a reaction from that sector and while I do indeed think there are many bastards involved in many practices and professions I dont post my thoughts just for the sake of posting.

Many people hate private landlords and my wife and I often hide the fact we have rental properties from those we don’t know well in case we get a bad reaction, this stems from an incident a few years ago when we were called ‘buy to let scum’ whilst sitting round a dinner table with a group of people we had just met.

Came across this question in Quora. I lean towards the view expressed.

What is the difference between a Democratic supporter, a Republican supporter and the Village Idiot?

Democrats want to help make everything better, to make sure every American gets a piece of the pie and fulfil the American dream.

Republicans want to make everyone miserable. They refuse to help anyone because that would be “socialism”. They prefer to live in a dog-eat-dog world. Also, Republicans want to hurt as many people as they can, such as hurting women, hurting gays, hurting immigrants, hurting everyone who wants to have access to medical care, hurting the elderly, removing Social Security and Medicare and so on. Instead of treating everyone equally, they want to hurt everyone equally.

Village idiots are those who don’t see the difference between the two. The village idiots are the “undecided” voters who can’t make up their minds between helping and hurting others.

A recent “non-sequitur” cartoon illustrated very well who these “undecided” people are:

democats republicans undecided

Democrats are clear: they want to sail toward the palm trees. Republicans want the scorched island, where only a few can find proper shelter and to hell with everyone else. And the village idiots can’t tell the difference between the two.

This is terrible, and really rather rude of guests towards both you as fellow guests and the host/ess.

I am sorry I poked this hornet’s nest again! The tales of Rachman and more recently Van Hoofstraten and Fergus Wilson cast long shadows. A hyper sensitive issue for some with skin in the game, clearly.

Informed by neither jealousy nor ignorance, an objective understanding can be found here

Just as not all politicians are the same, nor all Rottweilers vicious, as said earlier, not all BTL landlords are bastards but then, some are and that rather defines the breed in the eyes of the general public.

The thing is that as long as the view that @Bonzocat leans towards is seen as reasonable and one that’s acceptable to hold, you will have generalisations that pigeon hole and denigrate large and diverse groups of individuals. This approach is both attractive (if you can put yourself on the inside) and deeply corrosive because it will eat away any possible meeting of minds and agreement.

There was a desire to get back to the humour that was expressed earlier. Political humour is seldom funny in its own right, and relies on putting down another group most of the time. It is one of the reasons I didn’t was political jokes in the humour thread I started.

Wearing that takes some guts, and a total lack of sartorial sense. What were we saying about narcissists
