I think it was the “U turn if you want to” bit to which I was referring
As opposed to his illustrious predecessor, the gentleman is for turning.
No, but he’s opinion fluid. Doesn’t matter what’s right or wrong or what lies are required once he and his grubby henchpersons can have a sliver of a chance of hanging on to power and doing more damage.
I think he’s determined to knock Truss and Johnson into second and third place in list of worst PMs ever table.
Truss is probably unassailable in that regard.
Is Sunak worse than Johnson? - Hard to say. Johnson was mostly disinterested which I suspect partly limited the damage that he was able to bring. Sunak is more naïve but seems to be more actively evil.
We can quantify the damage Truss and Johnson did in post. While Truss remains a dangerous liability for the Country, Sunak is only getting into his stride and the folk pulling his strings will only go down fighting. I think he could do a lot more damage over the next year. The right thing for the Country is an election now. Time for UK voters to break out the gilets jaunes, though you could probably be arrested for writing that in today’s Britain.
Did you see poor old Charles is bleating on here about the environment, while his PM is back home tearing the plan🙄 A shambles.
Not bleating, but emphasising just how important it is to us all.
You have to wonder just how the electorate will view Keir Starmer’s idea of reducing the voting age to 16?
It seems to me that this is a total gift to the Tories who can invent so many scenarios where the children are listening to TikTok to get their political messaging.
The issue is Jane, one would expect consistency between the head of state and his head of government. Sunak is taking the “it’ll be alright on the night” approach.
Bear in mind that I work with people from a variety of nations, the only people I know talking about Brexit now are those on SF.
Well, he’s just made my decision easier come the next General Election
What exactly do the Lib Dems stand for these days?
Although true this is also disingenuous - in talking about these things people are talking about Brexit - because Brexit (and the Tory party that gave us Brexit) underlie the failings in both.
I guess because it affects SF members more than most.
All of my family in the UK are still talking about Brexit.
While I somewhat agree, there is no heart to re-discuss why it was such a bad idea and isn’t our economy failing because we left the European union. It’s much more a case of what do we do where we are now and what are we going to do in the future. Starmer might or might not negotiate a better relationship with the EU, but for most people Brexit is dead and gone, even though the effects remain.
Possibly because of your (and their?) connection with France?
The problem is that he won’t, a bit of tinkering around the edges might remove some of the frictions and open up a few opportunities that we have thrown away (e.g. resuming participation in Erasmus) but the only thing that will really reverse the economic damage will be to be back in the SM.
Only for some of them.
It must affect all those second homers who bought in the EU before Brexit and all those who are going to have more paperwork and red tape to spend their summer holiday on a European beach.
One side of my family (middle brother and many children and grandchildren) are definitely talking about Brexit. They were ardent leavers who were persuaded by the ‘land of milk and honey’ lies. Now they are angry that they were lied to and have now become ardent rejoiners.
There is within my brothers family.
Speaking as a 2nd home owner it hasn’t affected us all that much. We’re both still working so the90/180 rule is trumped by the (much smaller) amount of annual leave that we get.
Post retirement I think it will make a difference - if we do (as originally intended)** retire to France we will have enough income for an inactif visa so it won’t prevent us settling permanently in France (I am sure that will not be the case for everyone though) but it is likely to increase the paperwork needed.
** Realistically we might not have done, and just come over “as and when”. That could still be the case but post retirement the 90/180 rule might cramp our style - if we stayed for (say) Jul-Sept we could not return until Jan which is much longer than I like to leave the property unoccupied. Obviously we could do shorter stays but that increases the number of crossings and as I get older travel is starting to switch from pleasure to chore (not to mention BF getting more expensive).
