The late Dean of Lincoln told me it’s also down to the US lunatic fringe of evangelicals who believe the second coming will occur when all the Jews in the world return to Israel and send lots of financial support to Israel to achieve this.

I am not sure where to even start. Support for Israel are mostly US warhawks regardless if they are left or right and has nothing to do with 2nd coming or whatever is getting referenced here.

Absolutely, but the Christian lunatics mentioned above also play a significant, very visible and vocal role.

I wasn’t sure where to put this. This course is new to me, sounds interesting. Maybe I’ll be a spy when I grow up.

In the 1970s, there was a lot of interest in “End Times” (a loose term referring to Christ’s Second Coming), probably because the 1960s had been such an uncertain time in the US (threat of nuclear war, the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, …). It spawned a literature and inspired songs, perhaps the most famous of which was Barry McGuire’s version of Eve of Destruction. American evangelicals looked for certainty and the wacky end thought it would be a good idea to hasten the world towards its end.
Of course, it was poor theology.
More recently, support for Israel has been based partly on the fact that the Christian Bible contains much Jewish writing. It is also another way for the American Right to distinguish itself from the Left, where the support is frequently for Islam, much like abortion was used as a wedge issue. (And, apart from the Netanyahu régime, Judaism is a more attractive and familiar cause than Islam.)

What puzzles me is why so much emphasis is placed on the Old Testament.
Everything changed with the coming of Christ and his message, a fact that Evangelicals don’t seem to recognise.
Trump is doomed as he will never pass through the eye of a needle and his attitude to his ‘neighbours ‘ is appalling.
