That political discussion with occasional humour thread

I can’t stop myself from referring to him as Heggarty, can’t think of the origins either, unless it is Peggarty (appropriate in the case of that photo ).
Anybody remember who I am talking about?

Perhaps Peggotty from David Copperfield ?
Perhaps not

That was my thought too but she doesn’t seem to fit.

Probably not Dan Hegarty the motorcycle racer either?

All good candidates, but which I don’t know, I do know of 2 but the food dish looks the most inviting.

The New Yorker’s been taking a few pops at Musk:-

A letter in The Times

“Sir, Surely one of the wittiest putdowns of a heckler (letters, Jun 5 & 6) was given by Sir David Maxwell Fyfe KC at a Conservative election meeting in Liverpool in about 1951. In the front row of the audience was Bessie Braddock, the formidable Labour MP, who kept shaking her fist at him and shouting: “You bastard!” After several such interruptions, Maxwell Fyfe responded with: “I told you to stay at home today, Mother!”

I bet the folks that put that sticker on their Tesla are happy with all their Chinese made goods.

If they were lucky, their Tesla was one of the Chinese made ones, with panels that fitted, rather than a us made one.

Remind us again of how much ethnic cleansing Musk is responsible for.

It’s an interesting question if taken seriously. He’s plainly worked closely with the Chinese government in relation to Tesla production and his satellite network. Then he’s had a role in facilitating Trump, which has likely been an enabling factor in the present state of Gaza. Elsewhere, I can’t say.

Unfortunately we’re beyond the point that boycotting a company, or even a nation, because they do some things that are unpleasant, is viable - because there are no completely “clean” companies or nations that you can rely on for sole supply of “stuff” (for various sorts of stuff).

E.g. you can’t avoid China - even if your new washing machine says “Fabrique en France” on the side it will have been made with Chinese components, ditto your “German made” BMW or Audi, or your Tesla, or…

The same goes for almost all “evil” companies or regimes.

No, I don’t quite know what you do about this either, other than buy a smallholding and become completely self-sufficient (but no technology, mind).
