Yes, this would have made a better cartoon punchline, but unfortunately - even though these climb-downs were in our time - not many people remember or even realised them as failures of the mighty US. Whereas a disproportionate, imo, of people seem to quickly remember and resurrect the French situation in WW2. Quite sad really as France had no option under all the circumstances to back down. Had they not done so, I fear that the skyline and architecture of Paris would be substantially different than it is today.
That might have been a price worth paying if they could have stopped Germany, but itâs likely they could not.
As it turns out, Berlin has changed a lot since 1940. Paris- not so much.
