The cost of running this site

Hi all,
When I last posted requesting support for the site, one of the things that came up was a “how much does it cost to run” query.
I have posted about this previously but for those who missed it or are new to the site here goes!

As some of you might now, last year I got spectacularly dumped (by telephone!) after 22 years together.
This meant a major life rethink. I’ve moved from one end of France to the other and I am currently living (luckilyFOC ) in Normandy because until the sodding house is sold, I do not have a penny to my name.
I had to give up my regular lucrative teaching jobs ‘down south’ and am now entirely freelance. So obviously this site, and the podcast need to pay their way.
And due to some extremely hard work on my part and some amazing support from colleagues, I am getting there!
But hosting costs for SF (and some necessary assistance with the social media channels) alone come to 4527€ per annum.
Plus of course there is my time. (Priceless…:joy:)

So yes, I will be reminding members on a monthly basis that they should ideally be contributing.
Regular contributions are much easier for me to deal with than one off payments but if you prefer to make a one off payment that is fine too!
It doesn’t have to be a huge amount; if everyone reading this made a modest monthly contribution that would make a huge difference. And I’d be posting this from the deck of my yacht…
However, that is sadly unlikely so a HUGE thank you to the regular supporters - you know who you are - and a HUGE thank you to those who support the site in other ways like @billybutcher for example. He’s equally priceless…

If you’d like to help, just click on the SUPPORT US link at the top of the page. If you can’t / don’t want to deal with Tippee, just DM me and I’m equally happy to accept Paypal, bank transfer or a cheque.

(Or cash, krugerrands or cakes…)

Thank you all. I really do appreciate the support.

xx

Open your wallets people, and send @cat some dosh.

Cat would you care to define (in ballpark terms) what “a modest monthly contribution” would be?

€5? €10? €20? €two squillion?

I do contribute monthly but wonder if mine is perhaps too modest.

Also I can’t believe hosting is costing you nearly four grand, that seems outrageous, although I’m looking at it in terms of a regular website rather than a full-blown forum…

No discourse is 900 and something plus 300 per month to my sidekick for the socials plus a couple of other bits and bobs.

Monthly contributions - it’s tricky because currently a small group of people are making some very generous contributions.

If everyone (and I mean everyone) donated just one euro per month, I’d be ecstatic. And on a yacht…

But that’s not going to happen unfortunately; so ideally I’d like between 5 and 20 coming in monthly from those that do appreciate the value this site provides.

Two squillon is good too though :joy:

Can I suggest that instead of subscribing to the two online expat papers the local and connextion we should subscribe to SF which is far more useful than those two papers put together. I was subscribing to the local €12 euros a month I think so I’ll now pay ,£12 a month to SF . Hope that helps as it’s such a valuable resource

Good for you, @geoffrey_Croshaw .

(I disagree with you about the Local: it is often more France-focused than SF, but it’s doing a different job so that’s fine.)
