The driver behind

How would deal with the situation where the driver behind is driving too close to you for your liking?
I have no issue with pulling in to the side to let him/her go by, except that it’s not always possible to do so.

Slow down to create a safe space in front of you.

Drive at the best speed for the road you are on, which might be the legal limit, maybe not.

When the road ahead has enough clear vision to allow them to overtake safely just gently slow down & they should pass you.

However, this is France & they will probably not pass you until they can’t see far enough ahead to pass safely, or they’ll remain too close for the rest of the journey (in which case the next pull-in seems like a good move).

Flick your hazard lights for a second to indicate you want them to back off.

This is the correct advice.

It is generally not advised to speed up, though I am not as reliable as I should be about following said advice

“Brake testing”, hazards etc are generally not advised either.

I haven’t tried this technique in France, I must admit. In the US, you are risking getting your head blown off.

More reasons not to live in the US

Some people think it’s a great reason to live there.

And luckily enough those kind of people seem very content to keep living in the USA.

Time to test your brakes!
I’m just kidding. I have to say, I don’t experience tailgaters that often thankfully. In those situations, I just carry on at the speed I was going, and try to ignore what’s happening behind me. My wife, by contrast, will deliberately slow down until they get the hint. Sometimes a tailgater might pass and still not be going any faster than you were, they might just be oblivious to personal space and safety and not doing it to be aggressive.

9/10 times you end behind them anyway at a roundabout or junction and wonder why they bothered.

Many of them never leave their counties or states.

To be fair many don’t need to - Texas is bigger than France and offers enough geographic diversity to provide just about any environment in which you might wish to play around.

I wonder why not as it works - for a while anyway.

Brake testing someone who is tailgating but not paying attention will get you rear-ended.

Geographic diversity is not cultural diversity.

No don’t brake test for that reason - flick the hazards.

Oh, I agree but it is still true that many Americans do not leave the USA because they feel little need.

Slow down, without using your brakes, and keep slowing down until you feel safe. Don’t engage.
