60kph?

They seem to be getting faster…

I downsized my motorcycle for that reason. I owned a powerful sports tourer and loved it but every time I opened the throttle I was in licence losing territory. I changed it for a smaller engined bike, still a great tourer but a lot more fun to ride on French backroads. My annual mileage has doubled.

Yes Jane Jones you are right…ish I meant 30 mph or to be pedantic 28 mph

Hah, I wrote something on that yesterday and then deleted it without posting as I thought it would not go down well. Something about, when I first got the current bike, passing two cars and glancing down to see that, in the length of those two cars, I had accelerated from 50mph to eek! with eek being a number that would be a respectable darts score. I was a bit more circumspect after that.

One of the reasons I don’t ride any more is that I no longer have the ability to ride fast well, and I’m not happy to ride slowly. It was slightly tempting to suggest buying a new Royal Enfield 650 as a 60th present, but my wife kindly kept me from doing so.

As my Doc solemnly told OH… “guard your wife, she’s got good sense” :+1:

In the UK, if you slow and pull over to the side where safe to do so and indicating, it is normal for the following driver to accelerate smoothly and overtake. Not here in France - I have gone so far as stopping just to let the car past and the following car stops behind me. Then I wait for him to pass (it is usually a him, although there are plenty of aggressive female drivers here as well) and he glowers at me for having inconvenienced him and clearly thinks I am crazy!

The thing is when overtaking I prefer to do it quickly. On a fast motorbike that can be too quickly. :slightly_smiling_face: It’s bad enough in my cars.

One of my friends has one. It’s a lovely thing and he loves it.

Quite a good question as I just had this conversation recently.

Living in France, with the higher motorway speed limit, less lighting, and the drivers right up your backside.

However, just returned from a visit to the UK to see family, I still feel a lot safer driving (RHD car in France) in France, with the higher motorway speed limit, less lighting, and the drivers right up your backside than in the U.K.

The ones that sit at 60 in the middle lane thinking they are safe, when they cause more accidents and traffic but completely unawares.

On this trip, sitting in the fast lane at 65, no traffic in lanes 1 & 2, I came up behind, he moved to the middle, I passed and moved back over to lane 1. They then went back into the fast lane.

I would gladly be a police traffic offer for no salary for a month to just fine these people.

Some people just don’t get that there is no slow, cruising, or fast lane.

Exactly. They should be called lanes 1, 2, 3 etc. The official guidance is to use lane 1 unless you need to overtake another vehicle, or position yourself for a junction where the higher numbered lane(s) peel off to a different destination.

Ok ok. Overtaking lane 3. :joy:

I find it crazy (unless it’s now changed) but learners couldn’t use a motorway. Surely it needs to be taught.

But I think in the UK it’s so ingrained it will now be hard to change. It’s seems to get better once you are past Manchester on the M6 I find.

Better! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Agree and some instructors offer motorway sessions to newly qualified drivers.

I think the reason is that a) you need to be a confident driver before getting on a motorway and b) not all test centres could easily include a stretch of motorway driving in their examinations.

Where I learned to drive and took my driving test the nearest motorway was 85 miles away. It still is.
