The end of Freesat (for BBC SD transmissions)

… If your vision is good. Many people who suffer from (for example) cataracts are unable to discern any difference.

Could be, my friend down the road knows all about such stuff and I’ll get him to come up here soon with his little gadget. But it is funny that this intermittant trouble only started when they shut channel 106 down, I had already been getting HD with no difficulty for ages.

@_Brian As far as I know I don’t have cataracts but I have never been able to see the slightest difference between SD and HD. I thought I would when I got this smart tv after the old non-smart one gave up the ghost. But no, nothing, no change. I could try and find a specialist but if it is anything like the trouble I’ve had booking a hearing bloke and getting a scan, I really can’t be arsed. If the various bits hold up as well as they have been doing that’ll do me till I drop off the perch.

NB The website Sky in France has nothing to do with Sky.com

@Soggydoggy - I hope you don’t mind but I’ve modified the thread title to stop people panicking that they’re about to lose all BBC output.

For a TV not to be “Full HD” (1920x1080 pixels) it would have to be really old, or just maybe less than 40"

Even then to get lower than “720p” (1280x720 pixels) would be unusual in any form of flat panel TV.

It is irritatingly difficult to find out what resolutions BBC digital channels use - Freesat HD appears to be 1080i, so I assume that the BBC channels use that. Freeview “HD” should be the same but, at least at launch the Beeb were transmitting most stuff at 1440x1080 pixels.

Standard definition is likely to be 576i (or 576p) - only 720x576 pixels.

So, you should be able to see the difference between “HD” and “SD” on just about any flat panel TV.

Yes indeed!!! Thank you, I did not mean to startle anyone! The OH sends sincere thanks to everyone who clarified, his next question will be something about a VPN thingy I think, definitely not aVIN number,I know what that is… We have fancy expensive receivers, all doing HD and endless recording.

Make that 20 odd years. We did our first Sky HD box over 20 years ago. Not many HD channels around then, but we were ready :+1:

Humax were still selling SD only boxes in 2019…

They must have had a warehouse full of them. Idiots will buy anything.

Unfortunately, @hairbear , not everyone is up up-to-date with technology as you, so if offered an SD box at 50€ or an HD box at 100€ they may well choose the cheaper option. That does not make them idiots.

No just short sighted, or maybe they also queued to by “digital” tv aerials?

Shows you just how brainless I am about satellite TV…!

No just the power of advertising!

I have had loads of issues with internet here, but then came along Starling and it has been great. Maybe not as quick as some fibre connections, but has made it easy for me to have fast internet without the need to have a fixed connection

Presumably you mean “Starlink”…?
If you edit your post I’ll delete this one.

So that’s why I get a notice saying that BBC1is now HD. I have a very small Manhattan box, an old TV and am too digusted with murdoch and his empire, ie fox news to have sky. The tv did announce no signal last week, I retuned Freesatand all is well. I have had cataracts removed and new lenses inserted in both eyes - perfect vision says my charming surgeon, and she’s right, but I don’t detect any real difference between SD and HD, only that HD has a lower volume.

Oops, spell check, should have been Starlink.

Could be your old tv, when ours packed in on Christmas eve :unamused: we grabbed what was in stock locally or no tv over christmas, it is a 4k set and the Attenborough programes are fantastic but not much is broadcast free in 4k but it is good, HD is also a bit better.

That’s what I have, a small Manhattan but with a new TV. So how did you retune your Manhattan?

Are you running the TV via an HDMI cable or SCART/Peritel?. If the latter then you won’t get an HD picture out of it.

If your TV & your Manhattan box have HDMI ports you should use them & consign all things SCART to the recycling bin of history.
