Talking of woodpeckers, when I came down to our livingroom first thing this morning I could hear a strange repeated rapid knocking sound. After listening round the room I realised it was coming through the end wall of the house, so quietly slipped out of th front door & went around the house. There was a woodpecker, hammering away at the stonework - quite impressive too, for tapping hard enough to be loud and clear through a few feet of stone.

Good photos (for that you have to be ready, and lucky!) and a good story.

This handsome bird, usually quite shy, visited the bird bath last summer. Fortunately there are no weasels here, as far as I know…

When we both our house several of the shutters had very neat circular holes in the top halves from woodpeckers. We haven’t encountered them since.
