You’ve seen  who the new deputy PM is, right?

Ahh, your post has just arrived here in the Outback :face_with_hand_over_mouth:, so let me enlighten you. France is no warmer on average +/- than the UK but the odious “living off the Daddy-in-Law” Ian Dunkin Doughnuts added in the French Dom-Toms (ie, Réunion, Guadeloupe, Martinique, etc.) to up the average annual temperature. Thus denying British pensioners who, despite having paid their stamp (as was), a few miserly bob at Christmas. I’m surprised you didn’t know that, I thought everyone did.

Anyway, I’m sure based on this new information you will agree with me he’s a rather horrible individual. He also introduced Universal Credit, which seems to be universally hated.

Now, let’s pick another of the Tories bigwigs to discuss.

Pick a cad, any cad (to coin a phrase :face_with_hand_over_mouth:)

Coffey? :slightly_smiling_face:

It is, though I don’t think the idea itself  is actually terrible.

No Universal Credit might have been good if it was rolled out better. Just shows how out of touch they are thinking everyone can afford to wait four or five weeks for first payment.

The problem is AIUI not so much the principle of UC itself but the way arbitrary decisions are made by DWP including dying cancer patients declared fit for work sanctions applied for missing a job centre appointment due to attending a job interview, going on holiday, being admitted to hospital and many other heartless and insensitive reasons (No 4 sounds like a film script for some reason).

Thankfully I have never really been unemployed - the last time I actually “signed on” was 2008, which was more a between jobs situation - I’d expected the job I was in to last longer but the gig turned out to be much shorter than anticipated. I got another job a few days after signing on but for various admin reason couldn’t start for about 6 or 7 weeks. It made Job Centre reviews amusing:

  • JC “what have you done to find a job in the last two weeks?”
  • ME “nothing”
  • JC “why, you should be looking for work”
  • ME “no, don’t need to”
  • JC “Why”
  • ME “Have a job, just can’t start yet”
  • JC :rage:

I thought it was funny anyway

The second time was a longer period about 2011/2012 - that time I decided I couldn’t be bothered to jump through their hoops; in any case I had too much in the way of savings to get any means-tested benefits, so I decided I’d get as much or more than I’d get from the DWP buying and selling stuff on eBay, which I did. Plus a couple of 6 week gigs to keep the NI paid (I managed “complete” NI despite only having 12 weeks work over the period).

I’d really hate to have to rely on UC though - I think the DWP set out to dehumanise people who need it (even those in work).

@kirsteastevenson commented she thought T. Coffey an innately evil person or words to that effect - I feel the same way about the DWP and wonder if kirstea’s reasons are the same as mine

True and true.

In my head I read IDS for DWP, the mean spiritedness starts at the, just as with May and the hostile environment. It’s a them and us attitude, and “they” are not real people.

What a fine example of health and responsibility!
