There go the pharmacies

Not in France surely? They have an iron grip on dispensing drugs here.

(I didn’t read link as was an Amazon site)

The link is Amazon.com (US). I can’t imagine it would be allowed in france…just yet

Did I dream it but I am sure on TF1 last night they mentioned that more pharmacies would be opening in smaller towns to stop people having to travel distances? We have two in this small town, my son has one in his village and so does every other commune around here and they are always busy. I wouldn’t buy anything on *mazon where health is concerned, too many suppliers shifting stuff that could be iffy. At least they control drugs over the counter here and I was surprised to find UK supermarkets selling paracetamol etc in public areas and not over a counter.

Why is that a problem, you can only buy a few at a time and the price is pennies considering how much they cost in France?

How many at a time, and how many are a fatal dose?
Asking for a friend, obviously.

Two packets of 16 is the maximum you can buy at any one time, if you took them all at once it could do you serious harm but may not kill you.

OK, thank you, and apologies for leaving you open to an accusation of assisting a suicide. :slightly_frowning_face:

It could. 16mg, (assuming they are 32 x 500mg tablets) could cause liver failure. “ In 2022, 261 deaths were recorded in England and Wales as a result of paracetamol poisoning.”

In any case, if you wanted to make sure there little stopping you buying two packs, paying cash then walking back into the same store and buying another two - maybe use a different till though.

And definitely nothing stopping you walking into a different store (or two, or three) and buying two packs there either.

That’s the problem with paracetamol as a method, that it may well kill you but slowly and very unpleasantly.

Which is the same as going from pharmacy to pharmacy in France, our nearest town in 17 has seven within a 3km radius.

Sadly that isn’t always a disincentive for those with suicidal ideation.

Yes, there does seem to be a lot of them. The margins must be good.

And also are a substitute for a visit to the doctor. The one in town we go to they are always busy and we expect to wait 20 minutes or so because each individudal “consultation” takes so long.

The monopoly pharmacy in nearest village has had a fire and has been closed for 2 weeks or more.

(Monopoly, as in France it seems once there’s a baker or a hairdresser or a pharmacy etc, they won’t allow another one to open within a certain distance. So too bad if the one you’ve got doesn’t suit you - another one won’t be allowed to open and compete.)

None of the surrounding villages has a pharmacy. Nearest ones are 18km snd 21km away. This has apparently caused much difficulty for many people needing new meds or existing meds renewed but there has been no other provision. This from the local nurses who seem to predominantly have a large customer base that requires a visit at home due to inability to reach the medical centre.

Is it just me? When Aprium ‘took over’ our pharmacy I noticed a marked difference in the usual helpful, jolly staff. Also they changed so frequently. I now only use a couple of independent ones, that are still around. :person_shrugging:

I bought a box of paracetamol in Chemist’s Warehouse in Melbourne last week. $2.99 for 100 x 0.5g.

But if you go shopping with a friend they can buy some for you and you can visit several supermarkets too.
If you are determined to end your life this way, this stupid ruling will not stop you.
I have many packets of cocodamol in my cupboard here in France. It just depnds on the assistant as to how many up to the maximum you get per month.

In the UK 2 x 16 packs of 200 mg paracetamol tablets can be bought over the counter. However, 500mg paracetamol tablets are now also appearing on UK pharmacy shelves but need a pharmacist to authorise the purchase.
