This Week’s Useful Gadget

As you know I’m not one of those people who recommend random crap just because it might…make them some money. In fact I make very little money from affiliate stuff (probably because of that!) but I do it because I genuinely like to share what I find useful.

This is something we use on an almost daily basis, for cooking rice, steaming veg (and yes, it even makes steamed carrots taste delicious which I never believed possible!), cooking potatoes, you name it it does it.

It is idiot proof to use (this is a must for me!) and incredibly easy to clean. Not the cheapest but we have had ours for years and it is still going strong. It’s a “highly recommend” from me.

My recent gadget is a thermometer. You just point a laser beam at something, pull the trigger and read the temperature. It has many uses but I use it mainly for cooking.

For example if I deep fry , I use a faitout, not a special fryer. It save putting a thermometer in the oil to check whether it is hot enough and when cooking steaks I check that the pan has reached sear temperature before putting the meat in (although the smoke is also a clue).

Is your oven heating to the correct temperature or your freezer getting cold enough? How about checking your pool temperature? Very versatile

I haven’t heard of those. What temperature does it go up to?

Had one for many years, many years ago. Very good.

Depends on the model, most do 300c (or F equivalent) some do 500c.

Thank you. I won’t be able to use my no-contact human thermometer then.

minus 50 to plus 600 Deg C

It sounds very useful.

I think Lidl.fr has them most of the time. Wait till you see one with 4.5 rating or over as they seem to vary manufacturer on different editions of the product.

I got mine for 7 euros, think it was in August price reductions. The spec on each, eg range of temps read, can vary too.

They come and go but should have them now as people use them for barbecueing.

Current offer on Lidl works out to 10% off at certain pricepoints plus a free shipping coupon in Lidl Plus - just for the next week.

Amazon.fr has 10 euros off 50 too for a week for stuff sold and shipped by them.

My IR thermometer measures at least to 440degC.

I also have a steamer, though mine has translucent baskets. They are very useful and surprisingly quick.

Where to put everything. If it’s in a cupboard you have the faff of getting it out and putting it away. I think our work tops are just about maxed out.

That’s what I tell OH when he comes up with yet another gadget. So far ‘Where are we going to put it?’ has worked.

I daren’t tell him about the thermometer though.

My bosch mixer, now buried at the back of a cupboard, other day O/H making bread didn’t want to kneed the dough, “well if you hadn’t buried the machine at the back you could have used it.”

I did not know such things existed and can think of one task which could be improved, daily checking of the pond temperature. I also worry about the dog in the car and over heating and go to great lengths to avoid it. Do you know if it is safe to point at animals and humans, or does it drill a little red hole right through them?

I have seen an advert on Amazon.fr which shows one pointed at a , presumably pet, lizard, but would rather be surer than that.

The laser is quite safe on unprotected skin but it would be wise to avoid eyes.

Thank you, I imagine it would be ok with his thick fur then, but on the other hand that might prevent a correct internal reading. I’ll mull it over a bit before ordering.

We used one for checking staff on arrival when covid started.

Cooks and stores data. Clever.

The box or instructions should say what class of laser it is and EU regulations should ensure it’s eye safe.

Caused me to go and look, 900c my model can measure and its a class2 laser.
