Threshold for paying income tax

A rather basic income tax question.
This year we came in at just under the income threshold for paying income tax, so we pay zero - yay. If we go over the threshold, do we pay tax on our total income or just on the bit that has gone over?

If UK tax it’s the bit over yay.

If France it’s the same yaie.

Peter is basically right. But it depends on a number of factors. Is your income all pension or made up from other income?
You can go to a site online provided by the French tax authorities to check your tax situation anonymously.
It’s not yet live for 2019 (2018 income) though: https://www3.impots.gouv.fr/simulateur/calcul_impot/2018/index.htm
