Seems a strange request, but can anyone recommend a good tin opener that i can buy,i have athritis in my hands and i am finding it a struggle to open tins,i have bought and tried several recently, most of them pretty useless, thanks in advance.
Many tins these days have ring pull openers and for these you can get a good opener designed for people with arthritic hands. We bought these three items, but not from this vendor for OH who has arthritis in her hand and fingers. There’s also a good bottle and jar opener.
For cans without the ring pull I open them with a standard can opener.
My can opener has a straight solid bar which is very good for opening ringpulls.
We bought one of these late last year, really easy to use, no sharp edges and simple to remove the lid plus has a ring pull.
Nicely fits your hand, solid and effortless, ( sounds a bit like an ad!).
That looks quite good. Not sure if OH could use the can opener bit because she has little grip in her hand, which is why we got the instant hot water dispenser below, but the bottle and jar opener may be easier than what we have.
It takes surprisingly little grip, the handle is more to steady it and the butterfly turning bit seems to glide round without too much effort.
My right hand has a problem with grip but I find this easy to use.
Lidl.fr has them right now for 2 euros each (4 models) if you’re quick. They’ll sell very, very quickly.

This isn’t a total solution, but I prefer to open ring pull tins by inserting the shaft of a wooden spoon and using it as a lever to open the can. Not so much a matter of lack of strength as a Health & Safety precaution against sharp edges springing up, particularly with small tins like sardines and anchovies.
Very similar to the ones I have bought recently. Very little turning resistance and cuts through the rolled over edge producing a lid for the tin with no sharp edges.
Ring pull cans/tins are not always easy to open especially if they are almost flat on the lid so that you have to get something to hook them up to pull. Corned beef tins are my particular nightmare as I love it but years back the jagged edge slipped and cut deeply in between my thumb and finger so I always wrap a tea towel round the tin since just in case it slips down again.
The amount of leverage on some ring pull tins is far too much IMO, sometimes the last 1/3rd can be almost unable to remove, especially for those with any arthritis.
I also find the ring part that is not meant to come of the tin completely but just fold back really annoying when trying to drink from a can, it gets in the way of my lips
Fortunately I don’t have that problem as there isn’t anything in a can I want to drink
They’re horribly fiddly and lots of them just pull off the can, leaving them almost impossible to open.
I always use a can opener, the type that removes the top and/or base of the can from the side. Not managed to cut myself on a corned beef/lamb can for over a couple of decades.
Yeah but the little key that does that on a bully beef tin often disappears. Do you remember when they used to have that type of key on sardine tins?
That’s a tempting opportunity for ‘corned lamb’ thread drift, but I’ll resist…
I won’t use them, can’t stand the noise ![]()

I remember those. Now you get an olive oil, tomato sauce or salted water shower when trying to pull the ring pull back and it never wants to go. Even getting the key off a corned beef tin now needs strength as they tend to rubber glue it on
