To lose one Prime Minister is careless

And I suspect Macron will endure the ridicule to give the French a little longer before they shoot themselves in the foot.

Maybe if the little people weren’t taxed so heavily, and were able to keep more of their money they earned - they might feel it was worth working harder, or longer; the more they earned, the more they kept. Just a thought. Trouble with all this talk about ‘taxing the rich - the rich can always - and do - leave; the rich do provide employment for others, and spend their riches in france. Chase them out - and a lot of money that is usually spread around disappears with them. It’s happening - noticeably now - in the UK, and certainly in London. Let the lower paid keep more of their money would be a first step. Stop all the bureaucratic nonsense of form filling, and getting ‘approval’ for this, that and everything - get rid of many of the civil servants - and their well-funded pensions. Any one with common-sense, and no political axe to grind, knows exactly what needs to happen. Mr Micawber, anyone ?

Macron won’t resign because although he’s domestically unpopular and impotent, externally he’s still an important and effective European leader. Internally he’ll endure the crap in order to protect his unpopular, but necessary legacy of pension reform.

Parties on the Left and Right both want to bring down the government, but none have any realistic proposals to deal with the deficit

What do you lot of non actives in France think of the taxe Zucman? Good or bad?

Many of whom are among the low paid! And their pensions are no better or worse than other French people.

Would you have a link for that, Warren, so I can educate myself?

I think it’s quite progressive. It’ll affect ~1800 people.

Have taken Jane’s quote for an example

Pls note in this text the word “moyenne” many in the fonction publique do not earn this amount when working let a lone in retirement.

My son said last night that they (teachers) HAVE to work next wednesday afternoon for FREE as an acte of solidaritĂ© as instructed by his principale. Normally weds afternoon in collĂšge there are no classes and the staff have the afternoon off which is very handy to do middle of the week stuff like sorting out domestic problems which you can’t do at weekends or evenings or even stay in school and do prep for the following days voluntarily. The staff at his collĂšge are not happy but have been told they will be breaking the law if they do not comply with this demand. Anyone else in the teaching sector on SF heard about this?

Well, if he’s talking about la journĂ©e de solidaritĂ©, then he’s right and it’s a good thing, in my opinion.

This, I regret to inform you, is a fallacy.

While it’s true that some rich people will move elsewhere if taxes on them are raised, those in the super-rich bracket will have already taken steps to stash their money in low-tax jurisdictions as much as possible. Some of them “provide employment” but many do not - they are wealthy because of inherited land and property or because of investment income - they are not directly involved in creating employment, nor does giving them tax breaks (as individuals) cause them to employ more people.

Also they do not “spread around” very much of their money in any particular country - most of it is not spent (they have more money than they can realistically spend on goods and services) - it stays invested in stocks and shares that are distributed globally - just as pension fund managers do on behalf of us little people.

The rich get richer because in most economies the income from stocks and shares is taxed at a much lower rate than that from employment earnings - supposedly to “encourage ordinary people to save and invest” but in actuality to help rich people stay ahead.

The concept of “trickle-down economics”, where you don’t “over-tax” the rich on the assumption that their wealth will trickle down to everyone else, has been a mantra of the Right for many years but has been proved to be demonstrably false.

As this article by the LSE explains, tax cuts for the rich do not benefit the general economy but simply increase wealth inequality.

Only problem is that there will be no pupils to teach and nothing to do for five hours that all the teaching staff don’t normally work on weds.

The alleged mass exodus of millionaires following the Tories losing power never happened

Not to forget that they also buy up assets, such as flats and houses, making it more expensive for the rest of us to try to buy such things.

I think there was more of a “small exodus” following Brexit - people like Sir James Dyson who after exhorting all of us to vote to leave the EU because it would make the UK a land flowing with milk and honey and rich in business opportunities, promptly upped and moved his business to Singapore

Don’t leave out part of their defense mechanism is to sow fear mongering and threats from immigrants etc etc and we are where we are. Keep us all fighting amongst ourselves whilst they quietly stuff us some more.
