Tomato recommendation

Can anyone recommend a good (tasty) variety of vine type tomato to grow from seed.

No idea whether they are “vine type” but for us, nothing beats Coeur de boeuf tomatoes for flavour and sheer quantity of flesh - wonderful with mozzarella cheese, basil leaves and balsamic vinegar.

Thank for the recommendation Sue. Yes I like those but I have the beefsteak type covered - also the plum type is covered. Not keen on cherry type so looking for something in between. I used to grow moneymaker but can’t seem to find them.

I don’t grow tomatoes because our local ones are so good and our producteurs’ stalls will often have more than half a dozen varieties so I always buy a good mixture of types and colours, but the variety I buy specifically for its firm flesh is corne des andes.

Our tomatoes were a soggy mess last year. I just bought what was available at the garden centres assuming they would have the most suitable for our climate. The tomatoes were far too big, took too long to ripen and either went rotten or were eaten by tiny slugs. I did manage to salvage some and they did taste good. We did have some cherry tomatoes which always seem to be successful. So I’m looking for a variety the size of a golf ball that ripens quickly whatever the weather!

I tried Red Centiflor Cherry last year, and they are small tomatoes (clue in the name), but very delicious and prolific. The other cherry variety I like is Black Cherry, but I appreciate you’re not looking for the cherry variety or the larger ones, so of the medium sized tomatoes, Saint Pierre worked out well for me, along with Rose de Berne, and Rouge Mi-Saison Mexicaine which is one of the longish pepper shaped looking tomatoes.

My favorite is one called glacier, which is précoce and grows well in lower temperatures. And is just the rightsize for me, not too small so bigger than cherry, but not too big either.

But not been able to find seeds recently so a pointless post really!

Thanks Gareth that’s exactly the kind of information I need I think I made two mistakes, I planted too closely and gave them a mulch which in such a wet season wasn’t necessary. I’ll stick to the cherry tomatoes and try one of those others you mention

Rose de Berne and Matt’s Wild Cherry. Both do well at 700m but as for others, last year was a catastrophe.

I just got some at Lidl for 29 centimes.

We’ve grown these and they were fantastic the first year. Last year they seemed to be hit by something that stunted their growth and were a failure whereas others grew OK. I’ll try them again but not this year. We grow a lot of plum tomatoes for juice and passata to freeze for soups and pasta sauces. Also cherry and beef tomatoes to eat fresh.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions which I have also been looking up. I now know more about tomatoes than I ever wanted too.

Interesting suggestions there. I more-or-less gave up on tomatoes as they always seem to get blight. Perhaps a précoce variey might help as it does with potatoes?

Actually Kokopelli have been recommended on the site previously (by me for one!) I got all my seeds from them at the time and they had an amazing germination level. I stopped buying from them when they were sending a bus around the country during covid telling people not to wear masks (or get vaccinated, obviously). Do you know if they still have the same chap at the head?

Try Sativa. The seeds come from Switzerland, but deliveries are made from Germany so there are no TVA issues.

I watched Charles Dowdings new video and he recommended a German company for seeds. I can find the name if anyone interested.

Can you get a variety called Stupice? It’s an Eastern European variety that I was able to get in the US but I’m not sure about France. It’s very early, with good tomato flavor which is surprising in an early variety, but not very productive. It was a nice introduction to the season before the larger tomatoes began bearing.
