Apart from mosquitoes and setting off pool alarms that can give anyone the right???
In your opinion how many litres or gallons would an average pool need for topups.
I ask this question because there are plenty of old diesel storage tanks on LBC for free, just couple up to a down pipe…
An average 8m x 4m requiring 25mm of water is 0.8m3 I think but its late and I think thats right.
In my neck of the woods during the drought a few years ago the rule was no more new pools, no filling new pools but maintenance of levels in existing pools was OK.
How often is this needed?
Good question, with a summer cover hardly at all. Without a cover and the canicule we have just had could be twice a week. Thankfully the odd shower of rain can often keep up. Then we have backwashing of the sand filter, conventional backwash vs my air assisted backwash which would use less than a 1/3rd of the water.
We have severe drought warnings still in place since 2023 and now even rinsing your vehicle down is severely punished by higher fines. People forget that movement on their water meters can be seen by the suppliers especially if using large amounts in one hit. New pools on this lotissement have not been filled since that time and several have accro props in place to stop the shells moving. Next door are a rule unto themselves with no cover and they just empty and fill to their heart’s content when the leaves and dust get too much, still I’m no grass so its on their head via their meter activity.
I read that Mairie are able to use drones for the purpose of finding pools which are in the vicinity of their village as well as officially checking roofs eg town halls for damage. Only those who have pools which haven’t been recorded should be concerned.
It’s pretty old news me
The water companies know as well because of the quantity being taken from the supply registers on the commune meter and your meter. That is how they know when you have a leak and contact you to find it. I have a smart meter these days being a new build and it records every hiccup and reports to me via the local water company.
We had a very convenient well within 20 metres of our pool which was perfect for topping up at any time of the year.
The water was crystal clear and the chlorine pool treatment made sure the water used was harmless.

We have a new water meter now that transmits the readings to our local water board. At least the reading is accurate and we only pay for the amount used.
Such as I have as it’s a new build and they are obligatory. At least I don’t have to get down in a deep hole with the spiders and read it manually as I did in the previous property when they only came once per year to check readings officially. As for checking properties, the fisc also use google street and earth to check on properties too as I found out some years ago when the ABF rang about windows we had changed 20 years previously and not installed the same style but it was let go as I could get stick on small pane dividers if I needed to.
