Quite sobering, when one examines the details.
(Possibly other Prefectures will be issuing comparative figures for their own Departments.)

Apparently driving on the wrong side in Scotland has caused many more accidents this year.
Seems to me that some additional and highly visible enforcement would not go amiss.
Interesting that the fatal crashes were in the older age groups.
Probably find it hardest to adapt and remember. Or perhaps older people just die more easily.
Drivers responsible for the Deaths… what Age Groups do they fall into ??? This information is not given …
Fatal Accidents in Dordogne April 2025:
30-65 year olds made up 64% of the 11 Deaths
65+ year olds made up 34% of the 11 Deaths
Sadly, I think figures for 15 Avril - 31 Mai Accidents/Deaths will be higher, having followed the local News reports on a daily basis… drink/drugs/speed still seem to be the major causes… aaargh.
But Stella the speed restrictions have steadily been increasing?
This graphic may help - unfortunately slightly hard to format but you can see the split of fatal traffic accidents by the age of the driver, grouped into various age bands.
Looks like the yougnsters are killing the old’uns
That graphic suggests that it is fairly even across all age ranges.
I remember when studying statistics many years ago for something to be deemed as “statistically significant” the variation had to be huge.
yes indeed… but people are still speeding/ignoring the limits … and sometimes at an alarming “over the top” rate…
why do people think it’s ok to do 200kh in an 80kh ![]()
and, let’s face it, many people/drivers think the speed restrictions are unnecessary
“they” know they can driver faster, so why shouldn’t they do so… aaargh.

Different types of accidents I expect - the young are maybe more likely to be over-confident in their abilities and the oldies it’s maybe due to no longer being really fit to drive?
That said, when I attended a speed awareness course (cough) some years ago, the instructor pointed out that most of us on the course were over 40 - he reckoned that because the yoof receive a more thorough driving education than we did (and of course it’s more recent) they are less likely to speed.
I have no idea what the relative levels of drink- or drug-related traffic accidents are though.
Maybe we just dont need 200bhp vehicles where my old mini cooper had about 68 bhp but we still had fun.
Principal causes for the accidents in Dordogne…
Speed: 9
Alcohol: 7
Drugs: 4
Not giving-way: 5

Nothing about travelling too close?
possibly “in connection with Speed”… as the Gendarmes keep advising Drivers to ensure they keep xxx metres away from the vehicle in front (depending on their speed…) and even more so in times of bad weather etc.
Many of the Speed accidents involve losing control, crossing into oncoming… etc etc
They are the problem, always involed in traffic accidents, ![]()
Have just noticed that EU national road death comparisons are usually measured per million of population, whereas African ones are per 100,000!
Not to mention the voles. ![]()
