Tree Preservation Orders do exist in France

I cannot locate the thread where someone was asking about a tree of theirs which was encroaching on a neighbours land…

Anyway, a similar situation cropped up in a nearby commune. I have been told that the “offending” tree (which is at least 100 years old) is now marked/noted on the Carte d’Urbanism and will be given protected status for future generations… (the Community of Communes has to agree, but that is normally a done deal).

The “offending” tree does not threaten anyone’s safety/property or anything… it simply has some branches which cross a field boundary by a few feet (very high up). It is a magnificent specimen. Experts have said that lopping could shock/kill the tree but the field owner (I know my rights) wants it done anyway… :zipper_mouth_face:

So, if any of you know/have a beautiful old tree, why not see if it can be “listed” and thus protected. It costs nothing and is all done through the Mairie.

If any of you have had similar experiences, it might be helpful to share them…

Good read. I hope our tree man will only trim the tree. Will have to look into this further. Thanks

Trees! I had one very large Willow split by the Earthquake, it was a major threat to the neighbours fence and possibly his roof. It fell towards another Willow that was leaning badly, and latched itself there.
Called a Tree Surgeon, he said it was urgent to get it down but he would need a huge crane, a cherry picker and so on it would be very expensive. My heart was now under stress from this. The worry unreal that this tree might come down and do severe damage. I called a chap that did my gates and told him the tale. He came with his 2 helpers and yesterday the trees were down. The offending one, brought part of the other one down with it, but it turned out to be rotted inside also. So best to have them both down. Cost yes a good old chunk of dosh gone out the door. They did an extremely good job and cut up all the wood, raked the lawn and did a superb tidy up. I don’t think that these particular trees come under the preservation order if they did they were going to go down eventually by themselves. I would put pics up but there is no option to do this. Thanks to Nathan and his crew for a great job well done.

Hello Victoria and welcome to the forum…

Did you ask your Insurance company if there was any sort of cover to help pay for all this… ??

A few years ago, my neighbour was advised (by his Insurers) to remove a tree “before” it landed on my house… and the Ins paid the cost… but maybe he had special cover in his policy.

Hi Victoria and welcome. To upload a pic, just hit the up arrow icon in the reply box toolbar, select the right file and away it goes, quite easy.

This is the offending tree. Gone now, and no I did not ask any Insurance for help in paying the cost. I wanted the risk gone the worry was huge on my back. Thanks.

Excellent ending to your story… and only 400 €… so not exorbitant.

I was glad to pay it and get the worry off my back.
Should one or both of those trees have fallen the damage would have cost me a lot more than the 400 bucks I paid. Nathan a great chap and his helpers just superb. Good workers too and a pleasure to have work for me. Yes its over for now but there are more trees to be felled in the future.
