Tuberculosis and cats – what you need to know

Human infection with M bovis is uncommon in the UK, and infections acquired from cats will be extremely uncommon. Nevertheless it is recognised that cats can occasionally be infected with mycobacteria that can potentially (although unusually) be transmitted to humans. It is important to remember that these infections in cats are uncommon, and that the disease is not highly contagious. Thousands of infected cattle are identified each year in the UK, but only a small number of infections in cats and dogs. Nevertheless, routine hygiene precautions are always recommended.
