UK Election anyone?

I had a look at the stats of the constituency where I was last registered on the electoral roll, which would be where my vote would go should I reg as an overseas voter.

Bristol E. The Labour vote went up from a win with 39.3% [2015] to a landslide with 60.7% [2017]. The LibDem vote dropped by over a half from 5.8% to 2.7%.

Either way, it’s not worth the stamps.

Another point that alarms me is that Nick Boles, one of the Tory MPs booted out by BoJo [aka Cummings] and who will not stand again, said on this Ch4 programme https://www.channel4.com/news/a-christmas-election|politics-where-next. [See it on YT] that his observation of the new intake of Tory candidates has revealed a distinct whiff of Eau de Farage.

Bojo is going to nail Brexit down with the enthusiastic support of sons of Redwood and Cash.

This illustrates Labour’s problem in 2017 to a tee - its vote went up but mostly in safe Labour seats where they went to waste. It’s a pattern which could be repeated this year if they are not careful.

If you feel that a LibDem vote in Bristol E would be wasted then register and look at vote swapping opportunities - eg I imagine https://www.swapmyvote.uk/ will be up and running for this election, probably other sites as well.

That’s just too depressing. Surely this is worth a stamp? After millions of us have marched and everything.

Would a proxy be any easier, cap’n?

I’m assuming that Christopher feels that there is little chance of anything other than a Labour victory in a seat in which 30,847 votes were cast for Labour in the last GE with 17,453 for the Tories and the Lib Dems 3rd on a dismal 1,389 votes.

If he’s a LibDem then he should register and see if he can find someone to swap votes with.

If he’s Labour he should register and vote - not forgetting that if too many Labour voters decide not to turn out “because it’s a safe seat” then it might not be. The constituency returned a Tory to parliament in 1983 and 1987 after all.

More or less it, Paul.

I couldn’t vote Tory - I have in the past - because of Brexit and that the party is now led by a man who, according to not a few European commentaries, “is a stranger to the truth”. It has been taken over by chancers and will it be stuffed with Cash-a-likes, Redwood Clones and Farage-lites. Once he has “Got Brexit done” Bojo will go on some sort of spending spree just when the UK should be hunkering down to prevent the economy going south.

I can’t vote for Labour - I have in the distant past - because I agree with those who say that Corbyn is not fit to lead a government. As somebody said recently, “Thirty years on the back-benches doing little but vote against his own party’s policies is no training for a Prime Minister”

One of his leading MPs, Jess Phillips, recently declared on Ch4, “Oh yes! If I could, I’d nationalise everything!” I don’t want that. That’s absurd. Have these people not learnt anything from the failure of that grade of socialism? Bojo’s jests about Jezza going off to retirement in Cuba are not far off the mark. I lived in London during the winter of discontent. I saw Leicester Sq piled high with bin bags.

Jo Swinson is smoking something if she believes she will form a majority government. She may be inhaling someone else’s smoke if she thinks that the LibDems will be bossing the show in some sort of coalition. There’s a chance they may have a role to play but the problem she has is that the new intake of escapees from other parties are likely to be swept aside in the constituencies they used to hold.

I agree with Guy. It is too depressing.

Nod, I’m mainly supporting the LibDems at the moment because I don’t actively hold anything against them.

It’s just possible that there will be more tactical voting - I could hold my nose and vote Labour locally ( 2nd in 2017, trailing the Tories 22k to 24k votes so doable) if I could swap votes with a Labour supporter in a constituency where the LibDems were 2nd and in with a chance.

But, even then, I agree we’re not going to see a LibDem majority government this year (or any time I’m alive, I suspect).

Sorry Chris - its the fact that you seem not prepared to try and/or could not find anyone to vote for that I find depressing. Sorry :(.

I urge everyone to vote - even if you don’t think it will make a difference you might just give the bastards a good scare.

[edit] … and Paul’s voteswap site looks like a great idea too. [/edit]

I find the whole thing very depressing too. I will definitely vote though and will look into the vote swap site.

The swap my vote website above seems to be an interesting concept - although I am not sure it is entirely democratic as per our first past post system - it is more a self implemented proportional representation system.

How is it not democratic?

And the problem with that is…?

Well, it’s early days Guy. It has only been on for +/+ 24 hrs. I dare say I will think on and do a bit.

But constuency wise it’s a shoo-in for the incumbent, the overall picture is dire and it will take some scratching around to make the best of a bad job.

Has anyone noticed the significance of a few dates?
Parliament will close down for the election on 5th November… (eat your heart out Guy Fawkes) and the new PM will be installed on Friday 13th

Thanks for posting that article @Dan_Wood
Let’s just hope that the twats get annihilated for another generation - although I do worry about what I wish for… A UK controlled by führer Farridge and his mini-me bitch Widdecombe will be worse than the fires of hell :fearful:

We have a date of 12th December and I hope to receive my postal vote paerwork soon. I am hoping that Boris will win a sweeping victory and that he can get Brexit done and dusted. It has gone on too long. Whether you voted leave or remain, the majority wanted to leave - so leave it must be. I doubt that it will affect me much as I assume that health and visa issues will be reciprocal for UK citizens living in the EU and EU citizens living in the UK. France is my home and my concern now. The UK will thrive of its own accord.

Not withstanding the possibility that there is an inconclusive result after which there might be days of negotiations between parties to decide will get into bed with who.
I rather hope it will be so as I dont know what I will do if Brexshit gets done :joy:
