This Labour government is making it too easy for the likes of Farage with their repeated flip-flopping on policies…
This was supposed to be a way of tackling asylum seekers working illegally. After having opposed it originally, I fully expect the Daily Mail to now say this makes it easier for the boat people to “take our jobs”
The problem was they had no mandate for it, and they pretended it would solve illegal working when it would do nothing of the sort. Result: it looked like authoritarian government.
The Digital ID sign-in that is for accessing a range UK Government services, will continue and replace the One Login for separate services (I have just it used to get into HMRC for the Transfer of Residence form.) The compulsory use of Digital ID to prove the right to work has been put on hold.
I don’t think I heard anyone say it would solve it, more that it would be one measure amongst others to combat it. We keep hearing that apparently the ease with which people can work illegally in the UK is what draws them to seek asylum there, so I’m not sure “doing nothing” is the right thing either.
I’m more dismayed, I think, by the optics of this decision though. It feels like the Labour party are their own worst enemy sometimes.
Edit now I’ve given this since more thought:
Perhaps this is something I’d missed. Perhaps they’ve calculated the flak for flip-flopping is less than for being seen as Big Brother.
