In the 50’s, Mum would send us to the shop to buy something called “greenback”… no idea how it came to be so named… only that it was delicious and a great treat.
Sometimes Dad would put a tray of sausages in the bottom of the oven… to cook gently while we were out.
Thus, when we got home there was a hot something waiting… yummy… crispy outer, soft inside, with burst crispy ends… double-yummy.
those flavours/experiences can never be duplicated… of course they can’t. no point trying.
Thankfully, the world (France esp) is full of many wonderful foods to discover and enjoy… it’s one long learning-curve and long may it continue…
Probably a contraction of ‘green back bacon’ -_ ie back bacon that hasn’t been cured with nitrates, so can’t be kept for as long… Given recent restrictions on use of nitrates in cured meats, maybe it will make a comeback.
Meanwhile, I buy nitrate free jambon from a local small scale charcutier, it’s excellent.
Must admit, I’m struggling to get nitrate-free ham hocks. I love pea and ham soup in the winter and found that a demi-sel jarret de porc is just right with green split peas in the slow cooker BUT the ones in supermarkets all have nitrates and the local charcuterie doesn’t do them as I think they cook with that cut themselves…
I travel regularly between France and the UK as a British passport holder with a Carte de Sejour. After having my passport stamped a couple of times in the early post-Brexit days, despite my protests, I now always clip my CdS to the photo page in my passport and present both together so the passport officer can see my position. Since doing this I’ve had no problems - a couple of times the douanier has praised me for being ‘bien organisé’!
Since I managed (at great expense ) to persuade our lovely village butcher to provide me with lamb loin for our Christmas '21 , I am now wondering if I can request of him for January 25 to make HAGGIS!!!
The fact that you have a CdS will negate any suggestion that the stamp in your passport restricts the length of your stay in France - so, in effect, it is of no effect
If you go to your local boucherie de l’abattoir or a butcher who gets stuff directly, you can probably get the pluck and a stomach fairly easily so delicious haggis
Hijacked again.
Why do you always poke your noses in and take the question and subject away from what is asked?
I prefer British groceries to the French and German stuff, in fact most continental offerings are not to my preferences.
My dream would be to have a Tescos, or a Morrisons, ASDA or even a UK Lidl nearby to my home here in France.
There are so many things that are not available in the French supermarkets which I miss even after living abroad for over 25 years.
Before it is said, I do intend to return to the UK just as soon as the opportunity arises. There always seems to be a new world crisis or problem that interferes with my plans. If Putin presses the button nothing will matter. let’s hope that he will stop breathing soon and things get back to a semblance of normality. Maybe I will then be able to go back to the UK…Yes I went of track but who started it?
I thought that the question you originally asked had, in fact, been comprehensively answered and so the discussion broadened out as normal discussions always do.
because this is a discussion forum… very few are expected to remain on topic and drift is indeed encouraged unless the stayontopic tag is used.
If you have a problem with that, take it up with the forum owners, not the members who participate. You can find them here
Shopping for food seems to have predominated in this thread. I wonder why.
I did not grow up in UK, nor apart from schooling and 4 years working in London, ever really live much there. More of a colonial child, so rice pudding, tapioca and anything with Carnation milk (which we called ‘cats milk’ because they loved it.) I do remember English people who brought their own teabags with them while we were drinking mint tea in Beirut. Seemed rather sad.
Living in 10 different countries throughout my life means I have an endless list of foods I quite miss. It also means I’m open to any (and all ).
Food triggers memory but it is best not to get too hung up on anything. That said, I do sometimes daydream about caviar spread thinly on freshly warm crepes and rolled…

I travel backwards and forwards at least 4 times a month for work in the UK
I always load my car up with different things for me and my friends.
never had an issue in the last 5 years; been searched often as I carry lots of tools for work.
Speaking of shopping, not food, can anyone tell me why things like Clarins, presumably made in France is so much more expensive than in UK? M&S I can understand but …,
