Unregistered Car in France

Could someone advise whether this car would be considered illegal.

UK plated car used by someone who has a second home. The car is marked as exported on DVLA and has not had tax or mot since August 09/July 10 respectively.

Car cut me up but I recognised the driver as a well known in the area.

I know where he lives when he is in France.

If illegal should I report him and if so who to?

Thanks.

It’s been exported from the UK for over 10 years and is still on UK plates? If that is the case it is most certainly illegal and much as I’m a believer in live and let live, I think it is your difficult duty to report it Zinnia. What if they injured someone?

Without doubt an uninsured driver. Report.

Why not make a point of speaking with this Brit and explaining that he can now Register the car in France (since before it was reckoned ā€œimpossibleā€ā€¦)…

He might not be aware that he can now Register the car and become totally legal… and this contact will ensure he is ā€œup to dateā€ and can do the decent thing… :+1:
(and you might quietly ask how he copes with Insurance etc for the vehicle on UK plates…)
gently, gently…

He might be counted as a minor celeb in the uk (retired) so I may just take photos and sell the story to the Sun lol

One presumes the authorities might be interested in why he hasn’t registered his car previously.

I’m in a shoot first and ask questions later mood this afternoon - report the b’stard

You are too nice Stella :slightly_smiling_face: If this person has been flouting the law for over ten years he deserves no quarter. Plus Zinnia is only putting herself in a difficult position by talking to him. Let the police handle it.

Go on, tell us who :face_with_hand_over_mouth: or PM me :joy:

Ah… well, I wouldn’t expect anyone to put themselves in a difficult position… of course not.

I manage to speak with all I meet, on any subject… particularly if it’s to do with cars (!)
and can and have ā€œwielded the guillotineā€ so gently that folk don’t realize they’ve been decapitated…

Well there is a saying that ā€œles FranƧais sont les champions de la dĆ©nonciationā€ (a claim I would dispute in favour of the Swiss, but hey), so, why not go with the flow, and draw the attention of the authorities to this person’s plight which he will be sure to remedy once informed…

Personally, I’d speak directly with the guy to make sure he’s very clear what he’s doing is illegal and I’d give him chance to right the situation. Starting to report folks is a bit like the Vichy situation isn’t it???

And remember the words that @SuePJ recently quoted on another post about ā€˜throwing the stone’. If everyone has never done wrong, fine, but I suspect that is not the case :man_shrugging:

Yes, or drop some clues if you don’t want to name them.

I’ve possibly done something that wasn’t quite in the rules at some stage, but driving an uninsured, unregistered car for 10 years would be waaaaaay beyond anything I - or any decent person - would attempt.

If the driver is that brazen, I doubt he’ll be too alarmed at anything a civilian would say - water off a duck’s back, no doubt. But a couple of gendarmes or traffic police turning up at his house for a good heart-to-heart might just put him on the straight and narrow - and might save someone’s life. I’d definitely report him.

p.s. Does anyone know where Stanley Johnson’s place is?

Haha, that would be brilliant if it’s him :joy:

Without knowing the characters involved could this lead Zinnia into an unpleasant situation? Some people get quite aggressive about being shown to be in the wrong.

A maire has quasi- police powers, so I would ask the mayor’s advice. And hope they took up the baton!

Interesting point @_Brian , as who draws the line, and how would you feel if someone reported you. I certainly don’t condone the guy’s behaviour if he indeed is driving around illegally, but just don’t take too kindly to folks reporting, if they haven’t first confronted the person themselves to give them opportunity to remedy the situation. If they’re confronted and then choose to do nothing, then fine, go ahead and report. And if the original poster has known about it for 10 years or so, then what message does that deliver

Or how about leaving an anonymous note. I would say that could be a means of providing sufficient warning without engaging, then report if no action.

Why? Wrong is being done: report it. Do you go up to someone beating their wife and say oh dear naughty you or do you tell the gendarmes?
Maybe this person is bigger and stronger than @Zinnia and confrontation would be unwise.

I would think the police had finally caught up with me, tough luck.

In fact I did previously find myself in a situation where this guy was physically harming his partner in a city centre, off the beaten track. And yes I did confront him, and he stopped. And as said, if the person in question is bigger or stronger than @Zinnia , then leave an anonymous note.

I’m afraid I think criminals are filth and need to be whacked by the law not given some feeble warning by me, and I don’t mind everyone, especially the criminal, knowing I told on them either.
