Could someone advise whether this car would be considered illegal.
UK plated car used by someone who has a second home. The car is marked as exported on DVLA and has not had tax or mot since August 09/July 10 respectively.
Car cut me up but I recognised the driver as a well known in the area.
Itās been exported from the UK for over 10 years and is still on UK plates? If that is the case it is most certainly illegal and much as Iām a believer in live and let live, I think it is your difficult duty to report it Zinnia. What if they injured someone?
Why not make a point of speaking with this Brit and explaining that he can now Register the car in France (since before it was reckoned āimpossibleāā¦)ā¦
He might not be aware that he can now Register the car and become totally legal⦠and this contact will ensure he is āup to dateā and can do the decent thingā¦
(and you might quietly ask how he copes with Insurance etc for the vehicle on UK platesā¦)
gently, gentlyā¦
You are too nice Stella If this person has been flouting the law for over ten years he deserves no quarter. Plus Zinnia is only putting herself in a difficult position by talking to him. Let the police handle it.
Ah⦠well, I wouldnāt expect anyone to put themselves in a difficult position⦠of course not.
I manage to speak with all I meet, on any subject⦠particularly if itās to do with cars (!)
and can and have āwielded the guillotineā so gently that folk donāt realize theyāve been decapitatedā¦
Personally, Iād speak directly with the guy to make sure heās very clear what heās doing is illegal and Iād give him chance to right the situation. Starting to report folks is a bit like the Vichy situation isnāt it???
And remember the words that @SuePJ recently quoted on another post about āthrowing the stoneā. If everyone has never done wrong, fine, but I suspect that is not the case
Iāve possibly done something that wasnāt quite in the rules at some stage, but driving an uninsured, unregistered car for 10 years would be waaaaaay beyond anything I - or any decent person - would attempt.
If the driver is that brazen, I doubt heāll be too alarmed at anything a civilian would say - water off a duckās back, no doubt. But a couple of gendarmes or traffic police turning up at his house for a good heart-to-heart might just put him on the straight and narrow - and might save someoneās life. Iād definitely report him.
p.s. Does anyone know where Stanley Johnsonās place is?
Without knowing the characters involved could this lead Zinnia into an unpleasant situation? Some people get quite aggressive about being shown to be in the wrong.
A maire has quasi- police powers, so I would ask the mayorās advice. And hope they took up the baton!
Interesting point @_Brian , as who draws the line, and how would you feel if someone reported you. I certainly donāt condone the guyās behaviour if he indeed is driving around illegally, but just donāt take too kindly to folks reporting, if they havenāt first confronted the person themselves to give them opportunity to remedy the situation. If theyāre confronted and then choose to do nothing, then fine, go ahead and report. And if the original poster has known about it for 10 years or so, then what message does that deliver
Why? Wrong is being done: report it. Do you go up to someone beating their wife and say oh dear naughty you or do you tell the gendarmes?
Maybe this person is bigger and stronger than @Zinnia and confrontation would be unwise.
I would think the police had finally caught up with me, tough luck.
In fact I did previously find myself in a situation where this guy was physically harming his partner in a city centre, off the beaten track. And yes I did confront him, and he stopped. And as said, if the person in question is bigger or stronger than @Zinnia , then leave an anonymous note.
Iām afraid I think criminals are filth and need to be whacked by the law not given some feeble warning by me, and I donāt mind everyone, especially the criminal, knowing I told on them either.
