I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis and wondering if I would ever wake up again.
me too…

Aged 9 i was at boarding school …our house master had prayer sessions before lunch (and it was a normal grammar school !) Asking that USA/USSR leaders would see sense and not result in nuclear armegeddon !
As a little kid I remember a flu epidemic that had us being told not to play with friends, and TB outbreaks. As well as world crises, as a teenager my friends and I discussed STDs with some alarm - particularly genital warts which somehow seemed very life changing.
And then when I moved to the States in 1980 I remember being frightened about catching AIDs - with hugely elaborate precautions in hairdressers and so on. And indeed lost two friends to it.
So health issues have been around, not as all consuming as this one, but something that has impacted in teenagers throughout the ages.
Well I have just come back from a walk and the house that I pass every day with one car parked outside, had four vehicles in the drive and a Sunday repas de famille was clearly in full swing.
There were also four vehicles and occupants busily felling trees on the edge of our woods. I cannot believe they were all members of the same household.
Anyone want to bet on when the post Christmas lockdown will start…?
We passed a group of 6 men on our walk this morning, and recognised two of them as part of the conseil municipale from next village…setting an outstanding example!
And 2 off-road vehicles barrelled past us filled with young people - not hunters. The second one stopped to ask us which way the first had gone, and we were sorely tempted to tell them the wrong path!
I mentioned to my OH today about how the newly moved in neighbour had suddenly acquired two further vehicles, one of which I recognized from when they had friends/family to help them move in.
Neither the English not the French have got the message - just got another request for booking our gîte for new year from an English “group of friends” …so unlikely to be a single household then.
I didn’t even know that the UK had lifted the quarantine…
We’ve had booking requests for both Christmas and end of year which I’ve turned down. One was a family, so probably ok, but from bitter experience, winter bookings can be a right pain in the arse.
We have accepted a booking from family who live about an hour away on the plain, which seemed reasonable and they sound of a certain age.
We too are very cautious with holiday period bookings now - have had the 6 friends booking that turned in 15, and left me picking paillettes out of the rugs for the next 6 months.
all that glitters is not gold then Jane ![]()
Someone does not know their Shakespeare.
Perhaps you will be reprimanded by someone with a rolling pin?
GliSters ![]()
I like the reuse of it in the Gray poem about his poor cat the pensive Selima who drowns in a goldfish bowl.
…be with caution bold,
Not all that tempts your wandering eyes
and heedless hearts is lawful prize,
Nor all that glisters, gold.
So can we start group dog walking next week?
no more than 6 of you and at least 1m apart
I think/hope there will some guidance on such stuff, before the 15th… since it is clear that the anticipated decline has NOT been achieved.
However, too many folk are stupid enough to do what they want and never mind the consequences… no matter what the guidance… so who knows…
Our dog club has been allowed to open from Saturday…(I think maybe they convinced the prefecture they were a commerce as they sell dog food). Lots of rules for humans, and club house not open (Brrr…) but our dog will ne excited as he loves playing with other dogs.
