This is a thank you to everyone who offered advice on our situation where the pool emptied overnight. It would seem that it was indeed a case of us accidentally and embarrassingly siphoning out the water! We have finally refilled the pool and there appear to be no leaks - it took a while to sort out because two valves that we needed to use for the hose to fill the pool were cracked and so these had to be replaced 
. Now we are trying to get the chemical balance sorted so no doubt, I’ll be back seeking more advice.
