Do you use a desktop email client/application for Gmail or do you just use the web interface?
Is there a desktop application that works especially well with Gmail?
Thanks

Does look interesting, doesn't gmail do that already though with the 'important' folder?
I’ve just seen something called Sanebox which is aimed at Gmail users. I tried to paste the link from my mobile but it won’t let me. Looks interesting though…
I'll be using Postbox 3 for the period of the trail at least. Looks good so far.
Thunderbird with Gmail set up to use IMAP - Linux, WIndows and Mac. There is an option in the configuration settings when you set up the account in Thunderbird to locally store everything for offline use. If you have a large inbox and folders, this can take a while to download and sync the first time, but it works nonetheless.
I recommend Thunderbird. It's free and works every bit as good as Outlook in my opinion. Also you can sync Google calendars with the Lightning extension.
Set up on IMAP if you use multiple devices that way you are just using the computer / phone to change files on a server.
Pop3 downloads files which can not then be seen on the server or other devices.
I've been using Thunderbird since OS X 10.5, and before that on Windows. It also works on Linux (Ubuntu), and one practical feature is that you can directly copy over you entire TB profile, including all emails, from one operating system to another.
I'm using OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) and Catharine has 10.9.4 (Mavericks) so ideally one that will work well with both releases.
Thanks
A useful guide to a few possibilities, primarily for Windows, can be found in this TechRepublic article. Geary is included, which is for Linux, and Thunderbird works on Mac, Linux & Windows.
A similar review for Macs was done by AppleInsider.
James, you've not mentioned which OS you are using.
However, if you're utilising one of the Linux distributions, then I can certainly recommend the EVOLUTION suite. Works very well with IMAP on Gmail and Google Calendar. Not 'perfect' for contacts synchronisation with Gmail, but that's mainly down to the strange way that they format address fields.
For Windows, Mozilla Thunderbird works OK in my opinion, but I think it could do things much better.
There's a wikipedia page listing many email clients at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-mail_clients
On IMAP I believe you are right, certainly when I have made changes they are reflected on the phone.
As for Mac, not a clue.
Thanks Krister, I'll have a look at that.
I use Thunderbird for all my email accounts, including GMail. It works for POP and IMAP, and can handle encryption also.
Thanks for your responses so far! I think I need a client application, I use email too much and need it to work offline on occasion too.
Brian, if you enable IMAP in Gmail settings, I think I am correct in saying that any changes you make should be reflected on your phone and web interface, or any other access for that matter.
Now I just need to find an email client for the Mac that works well with Gmail.
I'd answer if I understood the question.

The same as Robert and Terry. Plus, as Robert says, they don't get lost using the phone to read them.
I just log on using tbe web interface. It comes up as my default page along with others like sfn. I also have filters sorting the email
I don't. I just log on to the site each time.......and create a folder system which suits me.....dead easy! I f I can do it anyone can....;o))
One of the reasons I do this the emails don't get disappeared by other applications ie. the phone when indeed I used it....
