Because we have a large garden with an orchard and we are not in the first flush of youth.

Thanks Jane, that is quite a lot really and as you say, a waste of money. Maybe Fabien can be more competitive, about 10 euros à year sounds right (same as I pay for my conseiller municipal liability insurance)
The minimum Insurance requirement (by French Law) for a ride-on mower… is that is has its own Public Liability Insurance.
This came into the French Law in 2004, following an interesting case where someone was injured by a ride-on mower…and was claiming against the owner’s Household Insurance PL…
You can add on Theft, Damage, etc etc… so the price you pay depends on the Cover you ask for…
