Vacuum cleaner recommendations 2025

Our 5yo Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal seems to be giving up the ghost annoyingly early.

I like the tube-on-a-stick design (Madame prefers the pull-along cylinder with a long tube) and it would be for tiled floors.

Any suggestions?

Can you diagnose what’s up with your Cyclone? You can get knock-spares for most Dysons for sensible money. We have a Dyson Small Ball Allergy that’s well on it’s way to become another Trigger’s Broom.

Does your home have a lot of stairs and how strong/mobile are you both?

I ask as I’m a big fan of the 6 litre red Henry which is unbeatable in suction, bag capacity and mains cable length.

While Henry rolls along nicely, he’s a chunky boy. You’ll know if you’ve been lifting him up and down stairs all morning and he’s too wide to balance on your average stair tread without bracing h8m with your leg.

Both the corded Shark and Vax “stick” vacuums we’ve tried had the same problem : the debris compartment was too small and needed emptying every two normal sized rooms.

Thanks, @NotALot

I cleaned the filter, checked the suction head was clean, checked the hole in the suction bit wasn’t clogged with cat hair (I use a chopstick) … it still doesn’t suck properly.

We need to use it over three floors, separated by a spiral staircase. I think a cylinder vacuum cleaner - especially a powerful one like that - would be too unwieldy.

IMHO Dyson vacs are extremely expensive bits of plastic that work no better than not quite so expensive bits of plastic (and I wouldn’t want to give him any money).
My preference is for a Shark cordless

A Henry all day long. Quite the best hoover I have ever owned and deals with all the gribble that comes with a country lifestyle, kids, cats, dogs, horses, DIY etc etc!

Have you cleaned out the Venturi chambers? Mine used to get clogged all the time.

And if you spray the HEPA filter liberally with a room freshener, your house smells clean as well!

The older models are OK - I still use daily a DC23 Animal pro I bought new in 2009 and its perfectly good and sucks well. My son bought a new, very expensive rechargeable stick model just over 2.5years ago, it lasted just under the 2years, took it back to BUT who got it back to Dyson and son got all his money back as he had taken out the 5-year guarantee and then bought a Shark which is far better made.

I didn’t know that - thank you - great tip!

???

Just a point that new Henry’s subject to the EU regs are half the power of old versions. If you buy an old one there are loads of spares available

There are little vacuum air fresheners pop in things you could put into Henry’s bag.

They did the same with most makes, hardly a suck now in comparision to those new regs.

Have you tried contacting Dyson?

5 Years doesn’t sound enough. Ours is from 2013 and still going strong. When it became wheezy the first time, we contacted Dyson UK where we had bought (and they had the purchase record.) A chap phoned me, asked lots of questions and for me to try his directions while he was on the line, and ended up proscribing a new battery, which was duly paid fir and arrived in 2 days. The next time there was wheezing, I ordered a new battery in France and the old vacuum continues.

You may not have a battery issue but Dyson peeps may be of help.

Nothing sucks (or blows in the case of a fan) like a Dyson! It’s the engineering.

A few years ago we invested in a Miele C3 Complete Cat & Dog model. It’s by far the best vacuum cleaner we’ve ever owned - great suction & quiet (most work can be done on the medium quiet setting, & even full power isn’t too bad).

Said Miele is a EU rated - maximum 890W & doesn’t suffer for it. One of our daughters has the older more energy hungry version & you can’t tell the difference.

I completely agree. We do have a hand held Dyson that is OK for small work, but beyond that, nah.

I remember my Aunts Miele. Used to lift the carpet

You get all your search results from stoner wiki?

We have a G-Tech similar to this one:

Have got a Miele too. It’s donkey’s years old but still going strong. Highly recommend it.

They have an online outlet store, if anyone’s looking for discounted stuff…

Aldi France has a lookalike G-tech thing-on-a-stick in this week. Their guarantee is good and they honour it.

Otherwise my old Henry all day long.

“Nothing sucks like a Dyson” Well said, Susannah
