Happy May Day!
Just delivered a sprig to a very dear friend/neighbour. Sheâs over the moon
(There was only the one flowering sprig in the garden, so she is extra-lucky.)
And a very happy May day to you too Vero.
Best I could manage with the phone on my way to work.
Iâve just realised that those flowers are special in France.
Happy May Day to one and all!
Here in Sud-Angleterre, Martin the groundsman is busy mowing the village green in preparation for cricketing activities.
(sorry for the intervening brambles on the other side of our hedge, Surrey County Council like the âau naturelâ style when it comes to local undergrowth, they donât do Brazilians on shrubbery ).
Happy May day, up the workersđ
Bonne fĂȘte du travail⊠My company is doing le pont tomorrow, I then have Mon, Tues and Weds off as holiday plus another jour fĂ©riĂ© on Thursday followed by another pont next Friday. Lots of time off work whilst using up very little holiday
Wow! France really is going to be at a standstill this May.
FĂȘte de St Robert yesterday followed by Labor (sic) Day.
Thatâs my chicken dinner!!
My son and DIL are working and the children are at school/crĂȘche on the fridays where bank holidays fall on thursdays. No ponts.
Yup me too! We get the pont for Ascension but we make it up by working 2 half days elsewhere in the year.
Not sure if the whole of France has the same Rules & Regulations re giving Muguet (Lily of the valley) on 1st May⊠but this is what my Pal insists is the correct format âŠ
Giving Muguet sprigs is only correct on May 1st (not before, not after)
You must only give sprigs of Muguet which you have gathered yourself.
Definitely must NOT give away any Muguet which you have received as a gift from someone.
(which seems a shame if itâs a big bunch and could easily be shared )
She did mumble on about how many bells there should be on the flowering sprig⊠but I didnât really take much notice of that
be grateful for anything you get, is best I reckonâŠ
This year the Muguet flowers are few and far between in our village/commune so to make up for the lack of flowers weâve all been wishing each other âBon Premier Maiâ with lots of kissing/hugging as per usual.
(Those of us who have received Muguet sprigs⊠weâre keeping very, very quiet about it and feeling very special⊠)
We had our first barbecue yesterday on our newly renovated terrace in wonderful, if a bit windy weatger, with a small vase of muguet on the table.
Griddled asparagus from the garden to homwith the steak too.
My son said wednesday that one of his ditzy tiktok pupils thought the reference to a pont when asked by other pupils if there was one today, meant they were building a bridge to get into the collĂšge from the street. She just could not understand what the others were talking about, this is worrying when you see the intelligence levels today.
Someone has to be the most stupid in a group. It is grim though, I have the impression that whereas once you would have one or two solid ivories in a class now you can have 30%, I think unfettered access to electronic entertainment and COVID have a lot to do with it.
Itâs very warm here but itâs been so windy the last few days, weâve had to weigh things down. Yesterday the cat was blown over which disturbed his cool somewhat, the chair cushions ended up in next doors garden and and I caught an empty wine glass in mid air as it slid over the edge of the table.
I canât recall a spell of local wind like the present one, itâ gone on for several days, which is unknown for our bit of France. OTOH living here has certainly softened us up (well, me at least, as my wife had never known wind prior to moving to the UK). In the UK we lived on top of a cliff overlooking the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea, and it was always windy (even when it wasnât windy, the wind still blew) but unless there was a gale with 90mph winds, it wasnât noteworthy whereas here we get red mĂ©teo warnings of possible 40kph winds.
It would seem that living in France has severely depleted my wind resistanceâŠ
Yes and the parents are not good either. One mother who was sent for, for a discipline hearing was asking the teachers to film her for the internet for her fans. The principal wanted to throw her out immediately but had to deal with a mini-me daughter.
It gets me down too and I lived in far west Bretagne by the sea previously and had more than my fair share of gales and strong winds, but this tramontine goes on for days and you just donât feel like going outside and doing any gardening plus a hat is needed too if you have long hair.
Strangely, thatâs pretty much all weâve been doing this week, regardless of the constant gales.
If Iâd worn a hat, it would have ended up in the next commune rather than next doors garden.
Makes a change all you southerners moaning about the weather. Its normally our job up in the frozen North, but its been bloody lovely.
