Bonjour

Has any one had experience of wall tie bars? ( I have attached pics for waht I am talking about).

I am thinking about buying a property. I have not seen it yet, but a friend has and noticed these wall tie rods/bars. They are in one part of the grenier above the main house. There is only floor below (ground floor) , but there is a cave

Do you think this is a serious concern? Should I get a structural survey?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Yes I agree with you.

Thanks Andrew

Juging by the slack on them they're not tieing very much at all!

Bog standard in many parts of France, as James says, look for cracks, if there aren't any and they're old tie bars then they're doing they're job and the place isn't on the move. If they're recent and there are cracks - beware!

Thank you James.

They are quite common but I would be inclined to at least have a builder look at them. If they are recent I would be more concerned. Have a look for cracks, especially around lintels, try to determine if they are new if there are any or if they have been recently patched up.
