What are you planning for dinner tonight?

I’ve been tasked with cooking tonight (it’s a very rare occurrence so I feel like I should make a bit of an effort!) and I am totally lacking in inspiration.
So I figured I would ask the good people of SF and hopefully that might help me swing into chef mode.
Any suggestions please?

Tartiflette? Croziflette, if you prefer pasta to potatoes. Last one I did, I used raclette rather than reblochon.

I can’t make any useful suggestions but you have my sympathy, I’ve lost total interest in cooking and would be happy to never have to do it again.

If it’s for French guests try fish and chips.

I am having a fresh prawn stir fry with those lovely Chinese noodles from Grand Frais that you boil first so they go soft and expand and with a couple of star anises thrown in for flavour. I buy a box of prawns every week from Lidl for €4,99 and they make at least three different meals.

I agree, tartiflette with a green salad. Grand Frais have a simple recipe. You could do individual dishes of it if you want it to look smarter.

But what kind of cook are you? A straightforward reliable dish is fish (whatever you can get, fillet or a cod back) on a bed of sweated Mediterranean veg (fennel, onion, pepper etc with herbs and olives) and popped into over for 15-25 minutes until fish is cooked. With a knob of butter on top.

Or if you’re confident then something like a smoked haddock soufflé always looks impressive, or a gougère. .

A reluctant one…

Chicken breasts fried in butter, topped with grated gruyère and a rashers of bacon, grilled until crispy, served with new potatoes and butter+parsley, or pasta of choice and red pesto. Add diced red pepper for some colour and crunch.

I have a lot of other recipes, but all these things will probably be available in the local hypermarches.

Another, meaty possibility: carbonnade flamande. I’ve just done this and it’s cooking in the pressure cooker (an Instant Pot): Carbonades flamandes traditionnelles : Recette de Carbonades flamandes traditionnelles

How about Chilli? Just right for the shitty weather were having in Normandy right now. Have it with rice, or even better IMHO with baked potatoes .

Sorry @cat - can only offer my sympathy! I rarely cook either but keep trying to get back to it. It’s not going all that well…

Back up from the lab for a coffee break.

Thinly sliced pork steaks marinated with plain yoghurt, lemon juice, garlic, oregano and pepper. Remove the pork from the marinade and fry hard enough to brown a little, reduce the heat and stir in the yoghurt+ a little milk to keep it saucy (don’t boil or it may curdle the yoghurt). Serve with rice or couscous and salad to remind you of Mediterranean days.

Unless dining partner is French, then either too hot for X or too bland for Cat

We’re having a curry. Come on over, there’ll be plenty.

The good thing about chilli is you can make it as mild or as hot as you like, or somewhere in between.
