What do you NOT miss about the states?

Fidi…you may be disappointed to learn that there is a very similar thing here called a “Syndic”!

Hello everyone!

How funny to read everyone's comments!

I have not even left yet, but the number one thing I will not miss will be: "The Home owners Associations"

You nailed it…ALSO the idea that socialism is a evil idea rather than an opinion in the land of the free …along with having a glass of wine at a wedding…

you are right!!!! I am sorry for calling them PSAs... Now, PSA, whatever it may mean, sounds so much better... LOL

TSA, are the people who make you take your shoes off if you are younger than 70 .

I agree with everything that’s been said. In fairness, I would add that since my French is not all that proficient–I can hold a very simple conversation–I am really not aware of the political leanings, inclinations of those in my village. For all I know, the conversations taking place outside my window, or in the epicerie, could be as radical and intolerant as a tea party get together in Georgia (no offense to Georgia intended.). My point is that since I don’t really know the language, I’m not aware of many of the nuances of French life. That said, I do feel, at least in the village, that life is simpler and less stressful.

I cannot believe I missed listing GUNS and everything they represent in the American culture! I feel so safe here. It is the same feeling I had when going to visit family and I crossed the border into Canada.

Also everything that Michael Bergier said - completely agree!

couldn't agree more with you

This time of year I don’t miss the crass Christmas holiday commercialism which starts earlier and earlier each year.

And what’s with Halloween? How do people justify spending hundreds on over the top tacky decorations and costumes? We lived in an older neighborhood with sidewalks, so lots of little kiddies trick or treating which is fine, but the parents also asking for treats? Never mind the surly teenagers.

I don’t miss the gun culture and the untrained loons now legally carrying concealed weapons, more danger to themselves and bystanders than actual “criminals.”

Tea-baggers, racism, religious fanatics wanting to impose their beliefs on the entire country.

Believe it or not, there’s lots I do miss, but that’s another thread.

neither. Just those guys who make you take your shoes off at the airport even if they are flip-flops!!!

That is hilarious Holly...someone just asked me this and I too couldn't come up with anything! I hate to say it, but the one thing I can sort of come up with is obese people. It's not the people themselves, but I don't miss seeing the horribly unhealthy way we Americans eat and treat ourselves, it makes me sad!

I don't miss among other things

  • the "we are number one" attitude,
  • the lack of knowledge about the rest of the world,
  • the polyester look of Wal*Mart shoppers,
  • the belief that "bigger is better",
  • the NRA,
  • the arrogance of PSA agents and
  • being labelled a bad person if you don't believe in God

Pharmaceutical & political ads, gun culture, black/white racial issues, focus on plastic surgery & looks.....

My first thought when I saw this question was about guns. The obsession with guns, the mass shootings-- so frequent that they’re hardly news anymore-- the apparent reluctance/inability of the government to do anything about gun control. That’s what I don’t miss. Checked the other responses, almost all mention gun violence.

I do not miss the political ads were they exaggerate about their accomplishments and dish dirt on the opponents, I don't miss the phone calls of people running for office, the excessive amount of commercials on TV, the gun violence, I think this is about it.

I don't miss the in-your-face politics/ads or the violence and gun consciousness

!

I do not miss the in your face ugly political system there, using what occured just recently as an example, also dont miss the cowboy and indian bang bang shoot em up mentality! Cheers

I don't miss:

Traffic, the never ending political ads, being able to shop 24/7, noise, strip (shopping) centers, big roads.

That is why we live in the country here.
