What wood for potager raised beds?

This (American) guy has some very nice wooden surrounds for raised beds that he’s made. I would like to do something similar, but don’t know what the equivalent wood is in French.

Our local builders’ merchants is very good but one goes into the shop first to place one’s order and pay and then one goes through in the car to collect the order in the yard at the back. So it would be easier if I can tell him exactly what I want.

I’d be grateful for some vocabulary please. Thanks.

Anything class 4 treated.

I made mine from class 4 treated Douglas. The oldest has been there 5 years and it’s still fine. Lame de terrace. And class 4 treated douglas poteau for the corners and sides.

Edit: I lined the sides with a membrane I got from a local garden centre in case the wood had been chemically treated. Not sure what it was called but it wasn’t expensive.

I thought I would do the same - agreed, not expensive and found everywhere.

I got my wood originally from Brico Depot, but when I looked recently they only did class 3. I wanted to make some 50 cm square planters for the decking with wheels on as I have a large bag of wheels and thought they may look good. May have to look a bit further.

Brico sheds I have asked at best do class 3 the yellow stuff class 2. Of course they may buy in something occasionally for planters etc but I buy my class 4 from a wood yard.

Yes, I was surprised to get class 4 from Bricot Depot 5 years ago. They don’t do it now. We have a really good local wood yard that I may try next time. Mind you, its huge and may have a minimum buy

When I built mine a couple of years ago, I used Douglas direct from the sawmill. 40 mm thick, 200 wide. Lined with heavy duty polythene with geotex base (didn’t build a solid base, just a few noggins to keep it square

I wouldn’t use treated wood in contact with the soil.

I’m planning to build my beds using local black locust. A super durable and round these parts, very common wood. Cut them down, take the bark off and form the logs into a rectangle.

I’ve used treated wood before and it didn’t last long. My neighbour used oak sleepers for his ! Cost him a fortune, but they didn’t last much longer than my treated wood
