Why I've been AWOL!

Not sure if anyone noticed but I’ve barely been on the last month or so. There is a reason  I’ve just re-read Jean Auels 6 novel saga back to back . When I first read it 20 years ago I didn’t know this area at all. It has been utterly fascinating after visiting caves here. I looked up the caves some of the main story were set in, sadly couldn’t visit, obviously different name to the story but she says the real name in the intro. The little one has been doing cave men at school so in the holidays we went the the National prehistory museum, as we couldn’t visit the abri I wanted to! I was thrilled to see real artifacts from said abri! I finished the last book today so as you may have noticed instead of picking up my phone and reading my books I’m back to normal reading and SF visiting patterns

Have you visited Pech Merle? Maybe a bit of a way for you - beyond Cahors - but WELL worth it - fascinating.

No, not yet but on my list! Looked at it ages ago when you mentioned it.

Welcome back, Tory! You were missed.

In case you have caves in mind…

Yes I saw that! We apparently have caves all under our house / garden / neighbours. Haven’t taken up our mayor / neighbours offer to visit. He showed us photos but at the time I was 20kg heavier and not sure I could fit

I’d send the children in first

Definitely, was a highlight of our trip to the Lot/Aveyron in Sept/Oct (one of many). And the fact that one could go into the real thing not a facsimile was indefinably more gripping.

And tomorrow morning we will be at Cosquer! The underwater cave in Marseille discovered in 1985. A facsimile of it, but still pretty wonderful I hope.

Have now been to Cosquer, and it is well worth it!! Heartily recommend it to cave and cave painting lovers. A bit “Disney” in terms of the mise en scene, but didn’t take away from the meaning of it and the kids (and the kid in me) loved riding around in a little slowly whirling cart.

Hugely disorganised up to the point you climb into your cart, so would not recommend in high season. But delightful in November and you can select a ticket time with few other people.

And it was discovered by Henry Cosquer scuba diving into a hole, so who knows what might be found in other unlikely looking places @Mat_Davies

We were going to do Marseilles this spring just gone, before the OH had to have her knee replaced, making it impractical. Cosquer was one of the things on our list, so it’s good to get a positive report. We don’t mind disorganised.
